Is this the future of American cities? Michigan has the highest unemployment in the U.S. Around 14%.

I doubt very much that it is the future of American cities as a whole, but certain cities - like Detroit - are a problem, as are certain states, ie California. The ones that are hit are hit so hard!

It's not like this is new news for Detroit, they have been in the toilet longer than I can remember. Literally ever since the Japanese cars started taking over big portions of the North American car markets... Jeez... like in the 70's I think? Sometime during the oil crisis... I also seem to remember that Chrysler, Ford and G.M. shut down many old plants and moved the work to either new plants, and mostly out of the Country. Detroit has been pretty much sucking since then... Not new news, just history... Kind of right up there with reporting on a tornado in Kansas, or a flood in New Orleans.

Michael Moore is from Flint Michigan, he mentions the economic situation in Detroit often.

Interesting article, although not surprising. I was in Anaheim two weeks ago and all of the hotels were less than half full.

It's called diversify your economy (don't put your eggs in one basket). I sure hope somebody circulated that memo at City Hall.

Actually caught the Mayor of Detroit on NPR a few months back, they are trying to do that in a big way right now. Probably too little too late, that place is gonna shrink.
