Yup had many teenagers tell me Facebook is for old people and I don't see them use it much anymore. Mostly snapchat and Instagram now.

I have always been a relatively open person and my facebook settings were lax.

They aren't now.

NOW my Friend List is set at "Only me." Meaning even my friends can't look through who I am friends with.

And sometimes it's tempting to say "screw it, I've been talking to this person via a handle for YEARS and I'm sick of it" and give your real name.

Advice: don't. To wit: DO NOT.

It works like this. You may be unaware that someone cracked the code on one of your friends. Say your friends Friend List is open. Now there is a list of people with their real names and photos for them to peruse. All it becomes is a name match up, a few open posts and photo albums and voila, a match.

Sometimes a choice is difficult and sometimes it's easy. It only difficult if you lie about who you are. I chose not to down that path and chose honesty.

I love facebook. I have for years and will continue to do so, but it's misuse is increasing, I hate their ads, and it's gotten more than one person in trouble.

My one regret- not having a better photo of myself as a profile pic. Darn!

BTW, I agree with much of what you have said about Facebook.
I am not the a prolific poster on Facebook and have considered closing my account. However, I do enjoy keeping up with family and friends who do not live nearby.

Exactly the reason I have not as well but it gets more frustrating each time I do go on it.

Part of my fun on facebook is to post something fun, and watch everyone dogpile in with an answer.

Like this: Got Snow? <------ answers from all over the US and Canada. Not just my friends either, their friends too. It's part of an openness I've enjoyed.

And my photography albums. I love it when people look through and comment on the photographs. Now I face a dilemma, do I make them all private or just friends and their friends?

I've seen a woman's LIke List get published on castanet. For gawd's sake, isn't someone allowed to have a like list without being publically shamed and admonished?

I'm at a loss for words. I'm on Facebook but like Piecemaker I do so to keep up with out of town friends and family. I can't believe someone posted a like list on Castanet. That's not being respectful at all.

I've often wondered if it's better to never mention that you are fb at work. That way all your blocked work collegues aren't offended when they can't find you or accept their fb friend request.

Does anyone automatically block co workers?

Nope. I've changed my profile picture to something less conspicous and re set settings.

If people here on Castanet have friends from Castanet, then make your privacy settings on your friends list, "Me Only."

I wonder sometimes if the medium of FB itself leads people towards inappropriate behaviour because of the non "face-face" aspect?

Twice I've had "ex's" approach me on FB when their marriages were in the crapper. I'm pretty sure there is no way either of these guys would have sought me out if their marriages weren't on the way south in a real and meaningful way. I think perhaps they were putting their "feelers" out there as a way of hedging their bets if things didn't work out with their wives. They were both still married, both living in the family home, they just all of a sudden wanted to know how things were with me after they had a blow out with their spouse.

It's very easy to romantasize about "the good old days, when we were together" when the contact can be made so quickly after discord in your current situation. I really think if you are married and you don't wish to put yourself and your marriage in a vulnerable position, then keep your ex off your friends list.

I did hear of a friend who felt threatened when an ex "friend requested" her. She was in hysterics. I said, "it's a good chance to block him." Which she did. No more drama.
