We didn't know this until we got there, but one of the back entrances to the drive around Mt. St. Helen's is Randle, a small unassuming town on Highway 12.

I am already planning on a stay in Packwood as Randle doesn''t have motel accomodation and I'm too delicate to be camping.

The State Parks man at the Johnson Intrepretation center said, "yes that's where you see the main tree blow down and a few of the artifacts of what was left after the May 18th blow up."

So I'm already planning. Spring flowers for colour, early June I think might do it.

Earthquake swarm near White Island unrelated to volcano, New Zealand

Image

An earthquake swarm started near New Zealand's White Island volcano on Sunday, October 29, 2017. Over the next 3 days, GeoNet registered a total of 137 earthquakes, with the largest measuring M4.8 at a depth of 7 km (4.3 miles).

"It's a swarm of earthquakes that can happen from time to time," GNS volcano geochemist Agnes Mazot told Radio New Zealand. "There is nothing happening in the volcano... it's not happening in the volcanic edifice."

"We can have more today, tomorrow, it would not be unusual, but we don't know for sure how long it would take."

Mazot added that the quakes seemed to be a continuation of previous swarms of earthquakes in the area.

Off the west coast of Italy...

New strong explosion at Stromboli volcano, Italy

Image

A new strong explosion took place at Stromboli volcano, Italy at 20:29 UTC on November 1, 2017, and lasted approximately 3 minutes.

According to INGV Catania, the explosion was similar to that of October 23, 2017. "Surveillance camera image analysis showed that the explosive sequence started with an intense event from the southcentral crater and was followed by several smaller explosions in the following minutes," the observatory said.

The explosion ejected abundant crude pyroclastic material on Sciara del Fuoco viewpoint and in the direction of Pizzo sopra la Fossa as well as dense ash plume which quickly dispersed.

Dormant Kadovar volcano awakens, first eruption in known history, P.N.G.

Image

More than 500 people living on Kadovar Island, East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea have been evacuated following the first eruption of Kadovar volcano in known history. This volcano, dormant until yesterday, is part of the Schouten Islands, and lies off the coast of New Guinea, about 25 km (15 miles) N of the mouth of the Sepik River. The latest activity at this volcano was a period of heightened thermal phenomena in 1976. The Aviation Color Code for the volcano was raised to Orange. 50 - 60 percent of the island is already covered in lava.

Violent volcanic explosion

Image
A huge column of ash shoots up to the sky during the eruption of Mayon volcano Monday, Jan. 22, 2018

The Philippines' most active volcano ejected a huge column of lava fragments, ash and smoke in a thunderous explosion Monday, sending thousands of villagers back to evacuation centres and prompting a warning that a violent eruption may be imminent.

The midday explosion sent superheated lava, molten rocks and steam between 3.5 to 5 kilometres (2 to 3 miles) into the blue sky, and then some cascaded down Mount Mayon's slopes and shrouded nearby villages in darkness, Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology and other officials said.

From the crater, the deadly debris billowed about three kilometres (1.8 miles) down on the southern plank of Mayon toward a no-entry danger zone. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries, officials said.

The explosion was the most powerful since the volcano started acting up more than a week ago.

This is interesting....ski hill on volcano erupts!

Japan volcano, subsequent avalanche kills 1, injures 15

TOKYO -- Twelve people, including eight soldiers, skiing on the slopes of a volcano near a famous hot spring resort in central Japan were injured Tuesday by flying rocks during a sudden eruption, officials said. One soldier later died.

The eruption quickly darkened the ski slope at Mount Kusatsu-Shirane with black ash, as volcanic rocks rained down on gondolas and people skiing down the slopes, sending them desperately seeking shelter at a mountaintop station.

The eight soldiers were in a group of 30 who were undergoing ski training when they were hit by the volcanic rocks, defense officials said.

Volcano - there she blows!

Image

Rumbling Mount Sinabung on the Indonesian island of Sumatra shot billowing columns of ash more than 5,000 metres into the atmosphere and hot clouds down its slopes on Monday.

There were no fatalities or injuries from the morning eruption, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said.

The volcano, one of three currently erupting in Indonesia, was dormant for four centuries before exploding in 2010, killing two people. Another eruption in 2014 killed 16 people, while seven died in a 2016 eruption.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said hot ash clouds travelled as far as 4,900 metres southward.

The regional volcanic ash advisory centre in Darwin, Australia, issued a "red notice" to airlines.

Some 30,000 people have been forced to leave homes around the mountain in the past few years.

Mount Sinabung is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Underwater volcano ready to go off in the Caribbean....

Eruption imminent: Volatile underwater volcano sparks 5km exclusion zone

Authorities in the Caribbean have warned the Kick ’Em Jenny (KeJ) underwater volcano could erupt within the next 24 hours. A 5km exclusion zone has been imposed by the government of Grenada.

“We are monitoring the situation, which has been brought to our attention by the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad,” Director of the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) Kerry Hinds said as cited by St Lucia Times.

The alert level was raised from yellow to orange Wednesday, indicating a, “highly elevated level of seismic and/or fumarolic activity or other unusual activity. Eruption may begin with less than twenty-four hours notice.” KeJ is located along the key shipping route between St Vincent and Grenada.

Ah Hawaii, where some city council really needed the property tax income and allowed a developer to build near the active Volcano.

Now they're all evacuated as the fissure could be spewing lava real soon. You know, the volcanic fissure they have right in the development. Sounds like something Kelowna's city council would do.

Life is full of risks. If buyers want to buy on a volcano, let them. They can pay the insurance premiums and then get a gofundme page setup when their house burns down.
