I probably should have said...when did Iran last start a war?

On 17 September 1980 Sadam Hussein announced that he was ending the treaty with Iran that had been agreed in 1975, five days later the Iraqi armed forces had started a massive offensive and by the end of October 1980 Khorramshar, the largest port in Iran had fallen to Iraqi forces, who were now threatening the Iranian oil capital of Abadan and the regional capital of Khuzestan.

http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/wars_iraniraq.html

The war began when Iraq invaded Iran, launching a simultaneous invasion by air and land into Iranian territory on 22 September 1980 following a long history of border disputes, and fears of Shia Islam insurgency among Iraq's long-suppressed Shia majority influenced by the Iranian Revolution. Iraq was also aiming to replace Iran as the dominant Persian Gulf state. Although Iraq hoped to take advantage of the revolutionary chaos in Iran and attacked without formal warning, they made only limited progress into Iran and were quickly repelled by the Iranians who regained virtually all lost territory by June 1982.

For the next six years, Iran was on the offensive.

Except, the Jews living in Warsaw weren’t indiscriminately firing rockets at German civilian neighborhoods and the Nazis did not bend over backward (eg. 200 for 1 prisoner exchanges, land return deals, etc. ) trying to negotiate peace with them.

The US only got involved in the war towards the end.... and that appears to have been provoked by Iran attacking Kuwaiti oil tankers in the Gulf. Obviously Kuwait was not their enemy or involved in the war, so it is pretty difficult to suggest that Iran "started" nothing, or for that matter suggest that the US supported BOTH sides in the Iraq/Iran conflict, ...just because some covert US arms dealers saw an opportunity to make money and did.

The United States and several Western European nations became involved in the war in 1987, in response to Iranian attacks on Kuwaiti oil tankers traveling in the Persian Gulf.

Iran was supported by Syria and Libya, and received much of its weaponry from North Korea and China, as well as from covert arms transactions from the United States.

Do we not have a similar situation being threatened by Iran today with respect to gulf shipping?

No hate here, some of my best friends are Jewish and that's how they see it too.
And if you take a trip it Israel you'll find a majority Israelies feel that way, they want live and let live.
The only grotesque misrepresentation on this form is that Israel wants peace, they only want the Palistinian people to die off so they can annex their lands.
If you lived in an open air prision for 45 years you might get tired of peace talks and start firing rockets too.

The beginning of the end for the US $

Gold for Oil: India and Iran Ditch Dollar – ReportForex News | Yohay | Created: Jan 23, 2012 14:13 GMT; Last Modified: Jan 23, 2012 18:08 GMT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to a new and yet unconfirmed report, India bought oil from Iran using gold. India certainly has the gold resources to fund the oil, while Iran is under pressure by the West, due the continuation of its nuclear program.

There were reports that officials have been floating this idea for some time, and now, as the EU finally decided upon an oil embargo on Iran, more details became available, yet still pend confirmation.

Oil is priced in US dollars, and bypassing the greenback posed challenges for both parties. Two banks are reportedly involved in this deal: India’s state owned UCO Bank and Turkey’s state owned Halkbank.

Both banks don’t have any business with the US and therefore are less vulnerable to sanctions. According to the report, an Indian delegation has spent time in Tehran and finalized the details of the transactions.

The annual capacity of trade between these two countries is 12 billion dollars. With gold trading at around $1668, that is around 7.2 million ounces of gold.

The step joins Russia and Iran’s announcement to begin trading in their own domestic currencies rather than use the US dollar – a reserve currency.

These details about the gold for oil deal come on the day that EU officials announce an oil embargo on Iran starting on July 1st.

The time it took the EU to reach the decision, and the late implementation date make it very easy for Iran to enlarge exports to oil hungry and fast growing Asian countries.

The use of gold for buying the No. 1 commodity, will likely have positive implications for the precious metal, if this report is confirmed and especially if the use of gold widens to China – the world’s No. 2 economy

You do know Hamas terrorists didn't just start firing rockets on civilian neighborhoods right ? And that they didn't just start sending suicide bombers into crowded market places full of women and children ? Given the ongoing wanton and irrational violence and gratuitous attacks continually perpetuated on Israeli civilians (while using their own as shields - the cowards), and the known capability of Israel’s military forces, I am actually quite amazed at Israel’s demonstrated restraint.

Sure but most rocket attacks hit empty feilds with no casulties, but when Israel retaliates with fighter jets firing into civillian targets resulting in 100's of casualties.
And now to return to the forum topic, the US does not need to and can't afford to continue to help the Israelies who are quite well equiped and capable of defending them selves.
