Bullying In The Workplace

Did you know... This is Happening?

Bullying in the work place is the most prevalent form of destructive behavior even outranking sexual
harassment and racial discrimination. Workplace bullying is often not taken seriously.

Its the Leaders responsibility to respectfully listen to employees, but what if its the Leader that does the bullying?

Adult bullies, like their schoolyard counterparts, tend to be insecure, people with poor or non-existant social skills and have little empathy. Leaders who have no leadership skills and who bully run disfunctional departments which leads to:

Poor performance
Unmotivated Crews
Health & Safety Issues

It is important that the problem is taken seriously at all levels. We need positive, peaceful and productive Leadership in our community work places. Especially when the job involves Emergency Response.

Positive Changes Need To Happen

Yeah, that's a tough one when times and jobs are tight. Many people don't have a lot of choices when it comes to staying in a bad job, and the sad fact is that filing formal complaints has the potential to make things even tougher. On the upside, if the work atmosphere is that bad, then there's likely not going to be a lot of guilt involved in leaving on short notice when something better comes along.

But unlike their school yard victims they are adults now and aren't being beaten up for their lunch money and stuffed into their lockers, as an adult you should know how to deal with a bully.

There is no place in the work place or anywhere for bullying. I was bullied once on the job, i stood up to him(the boss) and after that he respected me, just stand up to them.(One trick is to always carry a small voice recording device, to back up what is happening. :)

I find this post ironic as I recently quit a job within Government after being bullied. I had only been in the position for less than a year and the bullying started. I heard from other employees that my boss had bullied countless others in the dozen or so years she's been there. In one case years ago the bullying got so bad that an employee tried to take their own life. I learned a lot about working for Government. I could not believe how common bullying was within the ranks and how the union does nothing to stop it. I took my concerns to the union and they knew my boss is one of the worst offenders. Nothing changed. I could've filed a few grievances but at the end of the day the stress wasn't worth it. I'm young and experienced enough to find a job elsewhere. But the whole thing left a sour taste in my mouth. In Government in particular the absolute worst offenders climb the ranks. I worked 15 years in the private sector in all sorts of jobs in companies of all sizes. I never once had an issue and at nearly every place I left was able to use them as a reference. My experience at the Provincial Government by far ranks the worst. They may give lip service about bullying but they aren't doing anything to stop it. All the beaucratic red tape that one has to go through to make changes keeps these people in power. I used to be fairly pro union until this experience. I felt far more protected in the private sector as my employers were held accountable to somebody. If the bottom line suffered that boss would be the first to go. In the public sector taxpayer money is not treated with the same respect. One indicator whether a workplace is desirable to work at is the turnover of staff. No workplace can say it's the employees if they have great difficulty retaining people.

School yard bullies are easier to deal with.

You don't need to worry about losing your job and being unable to provide for your family.
