Re: Right to die
Have you every known anyone with ALS?
Do you even know anything about ALS?
It is awful and they usually only have 4-5 years to live.
Your post is extremely judgemental for someone who
I suspect knows very little of ALS.
Bottom line is its her body, her life and her decision on
when the time is right.
That may be in a month or a year or????
Its her decision.

Re: Right to die
It is a personal choice.
She is setting the stage with courage for when SHE chooses to die with dignity.
May be 5 days, 5 months or 5 years...Good for her.

Everyone has their rights. I dont necessarily have to believe in them. My point is, if youre going to write the essay, you better have a thesis.
Of course we all have different beliefs and you
are free to believe whatever you want.
Then you come on here and say things like she is
an "attention hound".
Are you for real???
I could not believe that comment.
If she did not fight for the right to die she
would not have this option for herself.I actually
think she is quite courageous.
I would think it gives her some peace of mind to
know that her end will not be an extremely painful one
and that she can die peacefully and with dignity.
I have also known many many people with MS and it is
not comparible to ALS.

I think its important that she did this now, well shes still able to. My Uncle died from ALS, and in the end he never would have been able to fight something like this in court.

I hope the new law and her wishes are well documented. I'm thinking it would be kind of scary and difficult to try and convey wishes or any form of retraction once the ALS is headed towards the final stages. I also think everyone, while basically healthy (sound mind and body) should have some form of "communication" about their wishes in the event of accident, ill health and death. So many people plan for so many things, yet these things are too often taboo or neglected. Her pre-planning, whether I agree with the method or not, shows maturity and wisdom.

Dying vs Suicide
Really, what is the difference? It is just you making the choice. It is just a more cleaner choice. A perscription vs a self inflicted more violent off-ing. I wish there was a choice. What is wrong with a choice?

This only seems to be a major issue with those who think human life is more sacred than any other life form. But they will think nothing of putting their dog or cat "to sleep" when it is suffering. I find it odd that they would let their loved ones live in agony for years, suffering horrendous pain and discomfort though. To me, all life is sacred but I do not want to see any creature suffer a long drawn out death because I can't face the reality of my own mortality. Every creature should have the right to a dignified death, just as they have a right to a dignified life.
Trying to get spiritual nourishment from a two thousand year old book is like trying to suck milk from the breast of a woman who has been dead that long.
