Grammar cups

Post by fvkasm2x »

No, not grammar cops.

Saw these today and had a good chuckle.

I find it amazing how many people these days can't spell or use proper grammar and punctuation.

My wife and I host international students and this makes us very aware of the proper use of the english language, even correcting each other as well as the students. My wife is especially good at pointing out my mistakes. Her favourite is the use of "are" and "is" properly, "There are 12 eggs in a dozen" vs "There is 12 eggs in a dozen".

"sow" is a female pig, particularly one that has experienced motherhood ;-)

Not to ruin the fun, but most of these examples are not bad grammar, they are poor vocabulary.

From the Oxford dictionary:

late Middle English: from Old French gramaire, via Latin from Greek grammatikē (tekhnē) '(art) of letters', from gramma, grammat- 'letter of the alphabet, thing written'

If you're editing, you are looking at the whole picture, basically any discussion of grammar will include references to vocabulary choice.

I'm thinking that a majority of people might get those two mixed up. Their use of "jive" instead of "jibe" doesn't jibe with the proper meanings of both words. I must confess, though, that the other day I had to look up the difference between "a while" and "awhile." Clearly I have too much time on my hands but at least know I know the difference.
