Yup. This is one of the most disgusting things about Canadians - the way old
people are put into retirement homes - and then drugged. I know two people
who were not too bad when they went in, and now are like vegetables.

Surely there's a better solution.

STOP.
DRUGGING.

Easier said but sometimes there are no other solutions and retirement homes can give families peace of mind.

The statistics are scandalous. Last year, the government body the Commission for Social Care Inspection reported that 5,140 out of 11,543 care homes for the elderly have badly trained staff and no proper records of what medication has been given to residents.
It warned of the risks of "wilful maladministration of medicine".

As a family we were very fortunate each of us kids were able to take time off work, 1 year each.
To enable our parents to stay in their own home, let them do as much as little as they wanted. We took care of the rest, we did all the driving and booking of appointments..etc..etc.

Not all families can do that, so care facilities are there to take that on. Unfortunately there are some bad one out there, which in my opinion should be taken over by better people.

So you have a ward of care home patients ravaged by dementia most of whom are a danger to themselves and others. What would you have them do instead of drugs? Lock them in a padded room? I hope that I pass peacefully in my sleep long before I lose my mental capacity or maybe assisted suicide will finally be legal by then and I won't have to worry about it.

Just a couple of comments:
Perhaps they had a form of dementia, which is a progressive disease and gets worse over time. While I personally would be reluctant to call our senior citizen's who are struggling with cognitive decline "vegetables," the changes you saw may be a result of a disease process.

I have seen the mis-use of medications in the elderly, sad.

And next, when people think the retirement homes will 'look after them' - the people
are sadly mistaken. The only thing retirement homes are looking after is their bank account,
when they drug the people into oblivion.

more expensive options.

First off is to care for those that need it. That's the priority. There already is research to find causes and appears some headway is being made. As far as retirement homes are concerned, which ones are you associated with? I've seen some very caring caregivers in the ones I've been in. Certainly would want to be involved as much as possible but to say there are more expensive options doesn't make sense.

What are the options you have in mind?

Both of the guys who were sent to the retirement center - I spoke to both of them
just before, and they were healthy, and not too bad mentally. I'm saying drugging those guys
made them into vegetables 10,000 times faster than they would have been without being drugged.
The kids of both of those guys should be ashamed of themselves - couldn't put up with a few slight
menatl problems their parents had - so put them away - FOR GOOD.

Option - just don't drug anyone into oblivion.

That's the way Canadians are.
