Food waste solution -- "Ugly" fruit & veggies get own aisle

Post by coffeeFreak »

This is an excellent initiative all stores should implement!

This Grocery Store Gave "Ugly" Fruit and Veggies Their Own Aisle. Watch What Happens.

It goes without saying that people waste way too much food, and food waste comes in many different forms.

Whether we’re throwing out fully-cooked meals from restaurants daily or tossing our produce out when it gets slightly brown, it seems like we’re always inventing new ways to waste food.

A shocking 1/3 of all food produced, or 1.3 billion tons, gets lost or wasted according to one major world study, and many of the world’s “ugliest” vegetables never even make it to store shelves.

Instead, they find themselves tossed into the garbage, never to see the light of day.

One French Supermarket chain, Intermarché, has taken it upon themselves to do their part to solve this problem, however, and so far it’s been a smashing success.

The Stats Tell It: Don’t Waste Ugly Fruits and Veggies!

The video below shows just how amazing the new change has been for business: 24% more foot traffic has been recorded by the store since it started putting its own twist and branding on the “ugly” produce, and now journalists in France are suggesting that every supermarket in the country should do the same.

Watch it here, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

So here in the Okanagan Valley

fruit growers are told to spray five times more often to achieve cosmetically perfect fruit

dumb idea

dumb management

dumb fruit industry - deserves to go down the drain.

What they should have done instead is convinced consumers that 80% less pesticide use

is way better than cosmetically perfect fruit.

that would ahve been the smart thing to do. And save consumers some money too.

How do you get out of bed in the morning when you see every. single. thing. as some massive conspiracy. How about you try commenting on a thread without making yourself out to be insane.

As you can see from the video, a lot of people don't care about imperfect fruit.

But go into the huge supermarkets, and you will see nothing but cosmetically perfect fruit.
The fruit industry experts have been blabbing for the last forty years that orchardists must
produce quality (cosmetic, not internal) or else go bankrupt. That's how the Okanagan fruit industry works.

Learn something, before making goofy comments.

If consumers were allowed to purchase fruit with small blemishes and imperfections, we could
not only save money, but reduce our intake of pesticides by 80%.

A new study out of Harvard shows that even tiny, allowable amounts of a common pesticide class can have dramatic effects on brain chemistry. Organophosphate insecticides (OP’s) are among the most widely used pesticides in the U.S. & have long been known to be particularly toxic for children. This is the first study to examine their effects across a representative population with average levels of exposure. Finding :: Kids with above-average pesticide exposures are 2x as likely to have ADHD.

Novel idea. Ugly fruits and veggies usually get sold for quite a bit less and end up in juices and sauces. This is a great way to sell them for a bit more and make a bit more cash for the farmers and stores. Surprised a certain poster isn't all over that.
