Teen 'spanked' for sexting

A Salmon Arm mother and father who used a plastic hockey stick and a skipping rope to spank their 14-year-old daughter have been found guilty of assault with a weapon.

A provincial court heard the couple wanted to punish their daughter for sending nude photos to a young man and that instead of being grounded, the teen chose the spanking.

Her father used a mini hockey stick two or three times on his daughter's buttocks over her pyjama pants and, when her mother came home, she hit her with a skipping rope.

When the girl went to school with lacerations and bruises, her friends told administrators, who called in RCMP.

Judge Edmond de Walle found the teen could not have consented to such a punishment given the amount of force applied, the use of weapons and seriousness of the assault.

De Walle found the couple guilty of assault, saying they took no steps to get help for the sexting issue, and the corporal punishment was punitive and degrading.

Anyone who thinks 'spanking' involves hockey sticks or skipping ropes clearly has some anger issues and should probably seek counseling or be in jail.

But I can understand wanting to beat your kid for doing something so ridiculous like sending nude pics, if that were my daughter she would never touch a cell phone or computer again while she lived under my roof.

they asked their kid to chose the punishment ??????? plain stupid... why didn't they drag that boy into court for receiving the nude pictures ??? isn't that considered child porn ??

this "sexting" thing with minors is very serious in my opinion...the judge should have also said something to the girl that sent them ...if that girl doesn't think her nude pictures will now be passed around all over the internet than she's stupid too...besides the regret she will most likely have by doing this to her own parents, wait until she realizes how many of her school friends will be seeing those nude pictures of her...

Wouldn't that be a more appropriate logical consequence, that she find out everyone will see her picture? Why do we need to save our children from their own distress? Lay down the rule, let the natural consequences follow. Taking away cell phone and computer would also be a nice touch.

I would agree with you Sliverstarqueen, but let's not forget the Amanda Todd's of the world...who knows how she will handle this when her stupid choices are forever imprinted on the internet for life...

Lessons learned after the fact, i.e after the pictures are out there are unavoidable.
Whatever the parents did as punishment, the Amanda Todd tragedy can still occur. You can't unsend pictures. Now you can try to have laws to punish anyone who resends the pictures, or torments the young person, but those punishments won't stop a teen from her part in the scenario. I hope this young lady in question will get counselling to avoid what happened to Amanda, but taking a switch to her will no likely help with the fallout from the pic sharing.

Hitting a child until they have lacerations and bruises is not 'spanking'...it is beating.

We used to get spanked ( certainly not into our teens though ) with wooden spoons and belts, but never did they ever leave permanent marks. A red mark that lasted a few hours at most.
Hitting a child hard enough to cut and bruise them is achieved through anger, not discipline.

well (as stupid as it is) her parents allowed her to have a choice of spanking or grounding...she most likely took the spanking because it would only last for that moment, whereas a grounding could have been way longer and most likely included no phone or computer...the kid decided to take the easy way out (or she thought she was) then she complains about her own choice of punishment ...

of course there shouldn't have been no beating (spanking) and certainly no choice of punishment (do your own job parents)...and taking away the phone and the computer is a given...but don't believe for a second that a teenage girl that's already into sending nude pictures of herself won't find another way to get online...all she needs to do is have a friend give her an old ipod and boom, she's back online again...

Now, everybody gets some consequences.

Don't think for a second that this girl won't miss her family home should her parents loose everything if the sentence includes jail time that makes it impossible to keep a mortgage/home. etc. Absolutely NO ONE who actually loves her will tolerate her behaviour, so she won't even gain that perceived freedom out of all this.

They should've just taken her and the boyfriend straight to the RCMP for child porn investigation. That's pretty sufficient to scare the crap out of these kids before the next Amanda Todd type of situation becomes reality.
