Michael Moore "Where To Invade Next"

Post by lesliepaul »

How many people out there have seen the latest Michael Moore movie "Where To Invade Next". Finally watched it last night and spent most of today confirming much of the content that was in it.

It was certainly an eye opener about how far the U.S. society has gone off course and especially in the last 60 years. My concern is that Canada has taken on too many traits of our southern neighbors and has headed in a horrible direction and this is unfortunately unbeknownst to many in this country.

Again, watch it and please take the time to comment back. Would like to hear what others have to say.

The problem with Moore is that his documentaries are so biased they're hard to watch. Yes the information is accurate, the way it's presented is drenched in bias tho. You can't just share the Pro's... to be a good unbiased documentary you need to identify and speak to the Cons as well - and not just the glaringly obvious ones.

Bowling for Columbine is the only documentary of his I've liked just for this reason. It doesn't have so much bias. The rest of his documentaries tho - even when I agree with the position I just can't handle the biased and unfair way it's presented.

Second time I've heard it mentioned tho, so I'll have to watch it more closely. I did watch it, but was multitasking and only paid attention to about 1/3rd of it.

I watched it and was intrigued to see how so many social issues can be handled differently if the system is open minded...

I think he is not making movies for an international audience.
He's making his movies for a U.S. Populace.
They really know nothing about 'socialism' or what other countries are actually like.

I watched the movie on Netflix and was most interested in the Norwegian prison scene. Crime and punishment in Norway.
The attack in Oslo in 2011 struck home with me when it was occurring because I have family in Oslo and surrounding areas.

I will not speak or write the attacker's name because I think it gives then the fame they crave.

I lived for 1 year in France and found their lives much better than here in Canada. My French cousins get free university education, post baby nanny care, house work assistance, a gym membership, long vacation, etc, etc.

Sorry, but I'd rather live in Canada any day of the week. Judging the quality of your life by how many unsustainable goodies you can suckhole off the taxpayer-funded nanny-state holds no water with me.

affordable education, fair school system (no private schools, all public and every kid's education matters ,also quality lunches for the children), fair treatment of employees, prison systems that actually want to rehab the prisoner and make them become productive members of society again...actually convicting the bad bankers (26 of them) who almost destroyed Iceland...

yeah that just sounds horrific (??)

The whole movie was an eye-opener but the education part was something we here and our so-called elected officials have turned a blind eye to. Christy Clark and the provincial Liberals have such a hatred towards education at every level and when you compare it to much of Europe..........WHAT THE !! I have said it before........education (University, College) have over the last 30 years in Canada turned into BIG business and THINKS like BIG business. The students are primarily looked at as a cash cow FIRST.

I know everything over there is not perfect but my god why does it take movies like this to enlighten us in North America. It appears that the powers to be feel better if none of this information is passed on through ANY media and that we should just keep on thinking that we are "the best" and have "the best". When you get a chance.........watch the first 10 minutes of the first episode of the first season of HBO's "The Newsroom" with Jeff Daniels (YouTube it).

I agree !! when I saw how some countries treat their children and understand the importance of their education, was totally an eye opener !!

and the irony that many of these countries actually based their ways of life on the American way of life, when they are the ones who are actually living that "life" and many Americans are not, was unreal..

I liked what that one woman (CEO I think) said when Mike asked what she thought America could do better, and she said "treat your citizens better" was so true !!

(I have seen ALL of the series of the Newsroom, great show !!)

I find MM docs to be entertaining and usually quite accurate. I have not yet seen this doc though (where did you see it)?

I do have some criticism however for MM's kind of "gotcha" journalism where he ambushes people and puts the heat on them when they don't have the same equal opportunity to formulate a reasonable rebuttal to his queries/accusations. What he did to Charlton Heston on NRA issues in the Columbine documentary was pretty sleazy work and made me sad. Of course, anyone willing to be a spokesperson for a lobby INDUSTRY may be called to defend themselves at anytime such is the democratic process of the land, but still, there should be some assumption of not being ambushed in the moment when you've had _____ time to prepare and make fun of them!

I agree with whoever said they'd love to see an environmental documentary from him (especially exposing major well-known corporate polluters). I am only mildly aware of environmental issues, although I appreciate that there are others with more interest than me who are watchdogs.

Having lived in Europe for a good part of my life, there is a lot of truth to this documentary, such as vacation entitlement, extra money every year to go towards your vacation, spa entitlement, hours worked and the overall more relaxed and logical view towards separating work from home which really does bring on a much healthier and productive work attitude. Of course, it all comes at a price, but in as the one person in the movie said - at least you get something in return for you tax dollars - which is spot on.

One of my work colleagues in Europe ended up coming to the US to work for a year - when he got back, he said he'd never go back to work there again. I asked him why and he replied "I live to work, I shouldn't have to work to live".

The thing is though, its not our Governments doing - its our own doing. The differences are not in our national policies or political agendas - its in us, its in our attitudes. What we want for our ideal life is quite different then those in Europe, the attitude one has towards work or your workers in Europe is quite different than here. These are mindsets that have been programmed into us for generations, whether we are from this side of the Atlantic or the other - and its up to us, and us alone if we want anything to change.
