To Queenie; Shouldn't it have read "sleigh" Christmas? [icon_lol2.gif]

To Kael; Just what I need to be doing at 4:00 in the morning. Bawling at a WestJet video.

To everyone; I grew up loving Christmas. Loving it hard. If I am lucky, every once in a while I still get a glimpse or a feel for what it was like and I am thankful for that. What I see today is not Christmas.

When my kids were of that special age where it was reflected in their eyes and their smile, it felt pretty good but we insulated ourselves from much of the outside influence so as not to diminish it for them. Santa was very real.

We started traditions. Many of which we still observe. The night before Christmas is still read round our tree on the eve.

I know that it can be what you make of it but when you are surrounded by corporate greed, commercialism and the belief that you have to have one of these (fill in blank) in order for it to truly be Christmas, it can be hard to get back there.

Once I/we are together with all of the family, I will feel good about it for a while but it isn't the same and hasn't been for a long time.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it. It just takes me longer each year to get to that happy place that used to appear at the beginning of December.

I am blessed in many ways and focusing on those gifts are what will make me smile.

So for now; Merry Christmas to everyone and may everyone experience a little peace and love in their lives, if only for a moment.

I have a friend that just kills christmas....100 percent christian...but kills it saying that there is no santa and so they dont have to buy gift...because the kids get things here and there all year long. saves him lots of money. seeing that i have a new little one...i was thinking the same...no santa.....I guess the only reason for santa is so at least the kids will shut up and behave when you say santa is not coming if your bad...

My mom had to teach kids from families like this. Even had to ask them to leave when her classes she taught engaged in Christmas activities, at the parents' direction. Long term scarring? You bet.

And you know how important it is to "fit in" at a certain age. I wonder how those kids are doing now and if they accepted or rejected the dogma later in life.

I know even in 1978-9, there were certain teens excused from dance lessons due to religious dogma. I often wonder how they felt about it.

At this time of year I often find myself compelled to research the pagan origins of 90% of the themes of so-called Christmas celebrations and reacquaint myself with the many reasons that we know that this was definitely not the time of year Jesus was born.... but that's me.... It's my own little tradition and I like it.

Cheers! :130:

:D Yes, we all know the story about how much the Emperor Constantine loved the baby Jesus …

Either as a means to unify his empire, or to make converting to Christianity easier, Constantine sought to blend Christian and pagan traditions. At that time, two prominent pagan winter festivals were celebrated. The first, starting on December 17 and lasting seven days, honored Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture. The second, starting on December 25 and lasting through January 1, commemorated the birth of Mithras, the Persian god of light. Constantine merged many of the traditions from these festivals with the Nativity story in the Bible and Christmas was born. From its beginning, Christmas was a holiday (or holy day), gifts were exchanged, families and friends gathered to feast, and a birth was celebrated; just like in the Roman and Persian festivities. The first mention of December 25 as the date of Jesus' birth is found in an early Roman calendar from A.D. 336.

The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (he was the first Christian Roman Emperor). A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on the 25th December.

winter, the shortest day of the solar calendar. This day was celebrated in different ways by different people all over the world.
For the pre-Christian Romans, December 25 marked their most important holiday, Saturnalia. This was later renamed to ‘Sol Invicti’, which means ‘the unconquerable sun’, in honor of the Syrian sun-god Apollo. Ancient Egyptians also used to celebrate December 25 in worship of Ra, or Horus, the sun-god child of Isis and Orisis. In Mesopotamia, the mythical god Marduk, who was believed to fight against the cold and darkness, was also worshipped on this day. The Aztecs on this day would sacrifice children in worship of their sun-god, Huitzilopochli. North-western Europe hosted festivities for the Nordic god Balder, while the Ancient Greeks dedicated the day for Adonis and Dionysos. For the Ancient Persians, December 25 represented the birth of Mithra, the sun-god.
