That said, on a national security perspective, a lot of new arrivals who do not speak English may feel isolated from the English or French speaking majority. This prevents assimilation, so Quebec has a unique and effective provincial program that provides free French language classes to non-French speaking persons. It's an excellent middle ground that may help address this issue.

Score one for the French. My issue would be this; while several of you have oh so tenderly suggested that these people are doing nothing wrong by being illiterate as far as our language goes, what happens when they are required to communicate to an official who is conducting an immersion ceremony and they don't understand what is going on? Or have to have a conversation with a DMV employee who cannot help them in their language? They will ask for interpreters and sometimes at our expense depending on the situation.

I think that if you are coming to a new country to start what must be a better life, it is insulting to not learn at least some very basic language skills as a show of appreciation and repsect for those who have taken you in.

I have been in parts of this country where Asian is the predominat ethnicity, heard people speaking English until I asked for directions and suddenly, No Habla.

Seriously. Now I have read all of the posts and I still have to say, especially after ZZontars post that if you want to be here, please, speak enough of the language to accommodate those who do not. I would do that at a minimum if I were to decide to live anywhere that English was not the prevailing language. They should not have to accommodate me.
