In Alaska some drunk guy played Half Breed by Cher on an old stand up jukebox all freakin night! Could hear it in the crappy room, over and over and haunts me even now.

Tell a story of packing a couple days worth of supplies and camping gear
onto bicycles and taking off for a few days with a couple friends.
At 13.

And get met with a twitchy eyed reaction from todays parents that would
not even let their 15 -17 yr old do such things.

Used to also get dropped off with a canoe and supplies at one place on a river
or lake on a Friday eve.
Then picked up at a different location on a Sunday afternoon.

It's what we did during the summers.

@14 and 15, the other way around.
Take a week off work and get dropped on a Sunday, picked up on a Saturday.

Our Parents sure were irrisponsible and never loved us !

Kids these days would start to panic as soon as they no longer had cel service or their roll of TP got wet. They would be hitting their emergency locator beacon within 6 hours.

And Dirtybiker, exactly, my friend and I were dropped off at a field to ride Princess, her horse. Bare back meant something different back then.
No headgear.
No adult supervision, aka "helicoptering."
No one else around.
Rock filled field.
Cell phones weren't invented yet.
No one heard of 911 back then.

1973 or 4, which puts me in Grade three or four.

Honestly, I don't allow my kid this amount of wander and explore.
Get's much more than most of the age group, but still.

Now kids also have so many allergies and food restrictions that parents have to consult guidelines when packing thier kids lunch. The lunch my parents had packed me in the 70's would be carted away by people in hazmat suits today. Peanut butter was a staple and Slim Jims were a healthy snack. How did we even survive?

That is a very good question. What came first? The peanuts or the allergies?

When struck with the irony that our lack of awareness about hair sprouting out of our ears, is because it happens simultaneously with the loss of our close-up vision.

You know when you're getting old when packing up and carrying supplies for a lake retreat now is a chore and hardly seems worth the effort (especially with variable weather reports).
