Lens & Shutter - Bankrupt??

Postby NotNorthAnymore » Dec 4th, 2018, 9:11 am

So I just found out last night that Lens and Shutter has closed down all 3 locations and is no more.
Guess we all knew that was going to happen at some point.

But for me it sucks - I left a Nikon 80 - 400 f2.8 there on consignment in the late spring.
They sold it to someone near the end of Sept.
Consignment agreement was 6 weeks before payment and they keep 35% of selling price.
A bit steep, but I knew it would be sold at some point to someone that would make use of it.
They sold it for $850 from what one employee told me the first weekend of Oct.
So I am due about $550

I have never received my money -and- no one from the store has contacted me :swear: .
Kelowna phone is disconnected - Van has full mailbox - no answer in Victoria.
The lens and Shutter site has been forwarded to Henry's in TO.
So they sold that portion.

Not a happy camper to say the least. :cuss:

I was watching the web site inventory pare down to just used gear and thought they would perhaps revive as a used-gear-only model.

That totally sucks you are out $550.

All we have left here, now is London Drugs.

Remember the days of Candid Camera and the other store that was on Bernard next to what used to be Grandma Lee's sandwich shop?

Kits Cameras was once a store here. Downtown on Bernard had Ribelins Camera Shop until late 70's.

Too bad you didn't know about the bankruptcy in October, or you'd have been able to put in a claim.

File a claim with the trustee.

Lens & Shutter Cameras Ltd.
0074178 B.C. Ltd., formerly known as Lens & Shutter Cameras Ltd., filed an assignment in bankruptcy on October 9, 2013 and Crowe MacKay & Company Ltd. was appointed Trustee of the estate.

Thanks I will get ahold of them.
Doubt that I will ever see anything.
But will try.

Selling something that does not belong to them, sounds like a criminal matter.

2013 hey, talk about my not paying attention to dates! Wow... has this process been going on from that point forward until now?

Is it possible to have a bankruptcy file open like that for such a long period of time with a business? Is there a time limit?

I just read thru the PDF and I think that that is when they shutdown all of the stores and then the new owner reopened just the 3 stores.

This is going to take some additional research to get to the bottom of what is going on.
Found out yesterday that someone from L&S Van - is now (as of this morning) working at Kerrisdale Camera.
Will see what I can find out thru them and let you all know.

Nah… I read a few blog posts (complaint resolution types) and some e-mail correspondence in a blog post shows someone had bought the assets after bankruptcy. I guess they were unsuccessful at making it work. It's clear now why they never seemed to have any inventory.

I know that online sales and "showrooming' had an impact, but it has to be said that when you are dishing out several thousand dollars on equipment, that you are not going to be using the likes of Amazon and risk getting grey-market, unserviceable, products with no warranty. A bricks and mortar store is certainly preferred by someone such as I.

unfortunately many specialty shops are going this way. Idiots go in there for advice and technical knowledge, then go buy online giving the money to an American company instead of it staying local.

People are way to dumb to see the value of the small business and brick and mortar stores so good service and ma and pa shops will soon be a thing of the past

Not buying at locally owned and operated is biggest reason why there are all of those big box stores.
Must find the cheapest price no matter the cost down the road.
When you have to start compromising yourself and your morals for the people around you, it’s probably time to change the people around you.
