Britain's ban of third party sales of puppies and kittens

Maybe for the Pet Lounge, but I thought I would give it a whirl under Social Concerns.

My understanding is there are similar local bans here in Canada, but should we consider a national ban?

Press release (Britain)

Ban of third party sales of puppies and kittens, known as ‘Lucy’s Law’, confirmed

The government has confirmed it will be banning third party sales of puppies and kittens, Animal Welfare Minister David Rutley announced today (23 December).

This will mean that anyone looking to buy or adopt a puppy or kitten under six months must either deal directly with the breeder or with an animal rehoming centre.

The problem with a ban like this, is that it promotes back yard breeders. I'm not a fan of pet stores either, but... if it curtails irresponsible breeders, then it's hard to complain that much

There are already a ton of people doing it, but the more you turn away from once source, the more people flock to Kijiji and Facebook to get animals from total losers who breed their dogs only for money.

There are MORE than enough pets available from local shelters and rescues and yet you still see TONS of people looking for pets online and willing to pay more money for them, than shelter dogs cost.

I got my Rottie/Shepherd cross from a shelter for $250. Spayed, first shots and she was 4 months old.

Yet you see tons of stupid people posting that they'll pay $500 to $1000 for a dog and they don't want to go to shelters, because they want a puppy (as if shelters don't get puppies).

I see your point. I wonder how it's going in Vancouver, but I can't find any follow-up info.

Anyway, here are some tips on buying from a breeder.

It's buying and then dumping the dog that angers me the most.

My Buddy is a chow shepherd rescue dog. One of my friends warned me not to take him, "Buy from a purebred breeder because you'll wake up one day with your face ripped off." Ten years later, :panic:
