Why is our spelling different?

Watching the start of the Canada vs Denmark and wondering about the spelling of Denmark?

Their Jersey's have Danmark on the front so why do we spell it with an "E"?

We don't spell France Frence

The correct English spelling of the proper noun, a country in Europe, is Denmark. The spelling Danmark is the native Danish spelling.

"Denmark" is an exonym. Just as Japanese people call their country nippon or nihon but most of the rest of the world calls it Japan.

Stamp collectors are quite familiar with all these name/spelling differences.
So I'm told.
