Riddle Me This Fortis....
Just received my monthly natural gas bill for a small commercial business. Looking closely at the charges and trying to make sense of the billing.
For the 1 month period i used a total of $43.53 as my "Cost of Gas" (28.1GJ at 1.549 per GJ)
plus a charge of $32.94 for "Storage and Transport"
okay - fair enough.....
But there is also a "Basic Charge" of $29.40 - don't even have to burn 1 iota of gas, just means we are connected and able to receive gas to burn if needed.
okay - fair enough.... i assume this is for infrastructure and what not (not sure how it differs from storage and transport....)
But then there are "Delivery Charges" of $93.92 - I am not sure how this delivery charge differs from the storage and TRANSPORT charges or what the difference is between "delivery" and "transport"
There is also a "municipal operating fee of $6.17
and a "Clean Energy Levy" of $0.82 ( I can live with this charge even though i have no idea as to why there is a levy on clean energy)
And now everyones favorite new tax the "Carbon Tax" of $48.84
then Pst $14.42
and GST $10.30
and then its own special GST for the "Carbon Tax" of $2.44
For a grand total of $282.78
The carbon tax is greater than the cost of gas that was actually used......
Insanity!

Yup, Clean Energy Levy... how dare you use clean energy, we're gonna charge you for it. Carbon tax is very high, and you pay GST on the carbon tax, a tax on a tax. I was looking at my gas bill yesterday and thinking all the same stuff. Bazterds. We aren't far away from society reverting to wood fireplaces.
When they tell you the cost of natural gas is dropping, it really doesn't mean anything compared to the costs of delivery and taxes.
