Naming a lake "Fish Lake" should be criminal

Postby Glacier » Aug 20th, 2019, 10:07 am

How many lakes in the same province, or even in the same area of the province can have the same name before someone is criminally prosecuted for unoriginality?

There was 22 lakes in BC with the name "Fish Lake", although some have become nick names as the indigenous name is now the official name. 9 of these lakes are in the Cariboo.

Here is an idea, how about a big game of paper-rock-scissors to see who gets to keep the name, and the rest have to either revert to the indigenous name or add a qualifier to the name. eg. TINY Fish Lake.

BTW, there are 11 Duck Lakes in BC (No, Ellison Lake is NOT called Duck Lake... the reservation is called Duck Lake, and it's on Ellison).

There are 7 Big Lakes in BC, 4 of which are in the Cariboo, and none are all that big. If you have to tell everyone how big you are, you're probably not that big.

There are 29 Long Lakes in BC, I'm guessing not as long as they'd like you to believe.

There are 10 Swan Lakes.

There is only 1 Scum Lake though, so having a unique name is not all that hard.

Also, only 1 Okanagan, Kalamalka, Skaha , Ellison, Kamloops, Osoyoos, Mabel, Shuswap, Bonaparte, Twist, Middle, Babine, Atlin, and Koocanusa lake.

Technically, it should be Wood's Lake (although the original name was Palmeewash Lake), but then got changed to Woods, and finally to Wood. There are two other Woods Lakes in BC and one other Wood Lake.

Because there are other Wood(s), I say we call it Palmewash Lake.

Just call any lake "Lake".

If anyone asks I just say I'm going to the Lake.

If they want to join me they can figure out which one because I go there to get away from people anyhow. :D

I convinced a friend to name her cat " Paka " which means Cat in her native language, Swahili.
I figure it can actually be used as an educational asset.

Just so you know, they did the same thing in the movie The Lion King.
One example is the Swahili word for Lion is Simba.
I imagine they do the same thing in other movies and stories.

They do! "Moana" means "large body of water" in Hawaiian and Maori.

This just might inspire me to form a petition to officially rename Okanagan lake to Big-Long-Duck-Swan-Fish Lake (had to add the last two, because "Big Long Duck" is one small typo from being a media dong show. Err... I mean gong show).
