I don't find it an issue. 10 digit numbers have been around for a long time in other areas. I make it a point to know if it's long distance or not - no big deal. I still remember cranking the handle to get an operator.

I can remember talking into two tin cans joined by string.

Bell Mobility was assigning area code 778 to cell users in downtown Vancouver in March 2008, just over a year ago. A family member has one of the numbers.
As someone else said, 778 goes all over the province.
I don't agree that our municipality made a good call on this one.
You get those "easy to remember numbers" that you call once in a while wrong, and you get a long distance call to Suzy at Prince George that your wife checks out when she gets the bill... not good... :)
They should have stuck with our standard area code and local exchange. If you had a local business, which series of numbers would you rather have? Local codes or flip-a-coin codes? Some rookie got his brain in a knot when he sold this idea...
Your 10 digit number is now your number to take with you to any place ... right?
So if you move to Vancouver you can take your "250" area code with you...
As for long distance charges, the system automatically detects the exchange the call originated at and detects the destination exchange ... and calculates long distance charges (if any) on that basis. The phone(s) could be roaming and have an entirely different "home" exchange. But you guys who threw that into the mix knew that already...

You can only move your number with in your own free calling area. In the lower mainland that means just about any number can be moved any where with in the lower mainland, but you can't take your Westbank 250768 number to Vancouver, or to Lakeview 250769 or Kelowna for that matter because each area has a different free local calling area.

The area code is a non-issue. Based on the actions of council, they should just use the phone number of Kelowna city hall. That's what they want ultimately.

No it not complicated that is your temporary City Hall/same as Municipal Hall. The phone# is a 778 area code your home maybe 250. What I was saying is it would be very funny if telus F-up and charges you long distant rate for calling your own Mayor. Knowing that this new area code is within both 250 & 604 areas. Do you get it now.
The switches keep track of that.... No more/less likely than calling from 250-762 to 250-763 being mistaken as an LD call.
