Locals charged with child porn

PEACHLAND – A long time reporter with the Peachland community newspaper is making news himself and it’s not a good news story.

David Andrew Preston has been charged with three child porn offenses, including making or publishing child pornography and importing or distributing the illegal material.

Police executed a search warrant at Preston’s Peachland home in June to seize computer equipment.

They were acting on information allegedly obtained by an on-line undercover RCMP officer with the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit going by the name Honey Hot Pot who claimed to be a 33 year old single mom with two young children.

Preston makes his initial court appearance early next month.

He is no longer employed by the Peachland View newspaper.

Preston was also the founder of http://www.peachlandnews.com

He recently signed off from the online newspaper, citing personal reasons.

I am all about due process and innocent until proven guilty in a court of law and just hope this is all some over-zealous cops mistaking online 'dating' (or something like that) for something else. But unfortunately these types of cases often have a fair amount of computer evidence. Child porn is a pretty serious allegation. Both morally and legally of course.

You never know who is around you and the adage is 'innocent until proven guilty.' Years ago we had an elementary school teacher charged with porn here in Peachland. He got jail time, moved, changed his profession and his name. He was a great teacher, outgoing and there he was among our children on an overnight school field trip. It was a shocker. They set a trap for him too, and his computer was loaded with kiddy porn. The RCMP and Crown Council must have something to take this one on Dave to court.

It's when we do have some knowledge of someone and they strike us as an ordinary,upstanding citizen that news like this is "shocking". It's not "shocking" at all if we have no idea who the person is. We just had a big long thread on the Kelowna forum about a former Kelowna radio personality convicted a similar charges. Quite a few uncharitable comments about the guy and of course, shock expressed by those who used to work with him, etc. Most charged with what we consider heinous offences also have a "good" side. Invovlement in child pornography is not 100% of who they are. It remains to be seen if Preston is found guilty or pleads guilty. I don't personally know him but I expect he has friends and family who will "hate" the sin, but not the sinner if he is found to be guilty. And that is how it should be.

If courts finds this person guilty of the charges against him, may he get full amount of the sentence by the law & courts.
Sorry if those who know this person, if this may seem cold. Those who know me on this board know I have absolutely no tolerance for those use or abuse the young or elderly, in this case child porn.
