Don't recall it that way - the vote was for amalgamation or incorporation so Westbank area voted to incorporate. The area was named District of Westside - then the vote for mayor and opinion poll on the name was done and it was stated what the people wanted to name the area would be honoured so the name was changed again for the second time formally (Letters Patent).

I live in a beautiful community in the District of West Kelowna that Westbank isn't a part of. Being from suburbia I can imagine in 50 years this name thing will be a not so distant past.

I know the Westbank name will prevail within the boundaries of the "District of West Kelowna" because it is the official and legal name of the area that has seen tremendous growth. The Westbank First Nation. All of the big box stores are in Westbank, B.C. on WFN Land.
The Okanagan Lake Shopping area, again WFN land only it's legal address is Kelowna, B.C. More to come --big hospital, I don't doubt a Casino endeavor, who knows. They certainly are outdoing what DWK has done in the last several years.
Their lands split the District of West Kelowna into pieces. There is still a land settlement that has not been finalized for the Westside Road overpass so we may even have more of DWK chopped into pieces.

Here is one sides take on how it went down:

A name had to be chose and the name had to be formalized. All done after voting for incorporation. Seems to me the schools got involved as well - made it fun trying to come up with something original but I also acknowledge the businesses that identify with a well known and marketable name.

Westbank doesn't have boundaries. Glenrosa would have to go with them.

The Westbank name is the official name for Westbank First Nation lands. That's what people will identify with down the road.

Westbank is the official name of WFN and it encompasses a great area within the boundaries of DWK. It is where all of the shopping is situated, not in the District of West Kelowna, but in Westbank, B.C. ( IR # 9) and Kelowna, B.C (IR # 10) It is now home to well over 10,000 non natives and with West Harbour, Sage Creek, Sonoma Pines, and the entire Bluffs area still to be developed. Even the Johnson Bentley Pool is in surrounded by WFN land. It's going to be interesting to see if WFN changes all of it's lands to the name Westbank, B.C. to coincide with their official name of Westbank First Nation.
If that were to happen, and it could, then where would DWK be. We have developed nothing compared to WFN and it isn't getting any better.

Which is why I voted to amalgamate in the second vote (first vote back in 1993). Who knows, could end up getting swallowed up by Kelowna down the road.

HELL NO!!! We don't want your griping and belly aching.
You will probably want to change the name of Peachland then.
Get over it and do something productive with your time, that is what will strengthen your community.

North Summerland has a nice ring to it...

My time is very productively spent, you have no idea really. Just because you disagree with my viewpoint there is no need for personal snipes about my productivity for my community.

If you disagree, just post that, feel free to post reasons why, or not.

Maybe just bitter that I got a hug from Fancy? If you asked him nicely...... Maybe...

Until the people "over there" sort out what they want the name of their "settlement across the lake from Kelowna" is going to be, would it be all right with everyone "over there" if I simply refer to going to "the town with no name"? Lawd jay'sus ... the people in the Mid East think that THEY have problems with what to call chunks of land ...

Annoying when people type West Bank - gives the area a whole new meaning.

This morning I noted a bit of a halo over much of "the land without a name". Does that mean that Premier Clark is back in town for the weekend?
