SD23 Budget cuts

Post by John500 »

How come SD23 on the one hand has to cut the budget and on the other hand just recently purchased a property in Lake Country at the tune of 4 million? Maybe the 4 million would have been better spent to accommodate the cuts imposed to them by the Liberal government.

Well actually - SD23 didn't purchase that property the provincial government did.

You see - SD23 only receives funding for running our schools. They do not buy/sell/renovate/update schools. That is done by the provincial government. It's the same thing for healthcare - Interior Health does not pay for hospitals to be built the provincial government does that and then gives IHA money to run the facility.

Regardless - Lake Country is the only community within SD23's catchment area than actually has growing enrollment every year. If any money is to be invested it would make sense to invest in Lake Country. Also - you need to be aware of the circumstances of the sale. They had a covenant on that property - they get 1st shot at buying if it came up for sale. Well guess what? It came up for sale. They had to decide to buy it now or risk not being able to buy it for many many years. They have money in reserve for just this situation (to buy property under covenant) so it's not even like they took money that was going to go somewhere else.
