Sharing backyards with other gardeners

Post by coffeeFreak »

Not sure if this website has been posted here before, but thought there might be a few out there interested in connecting.

Welcome
One of the biggest barriers to growing food in the city is access to land - despite the fact that many yards, lawns, and backyards have plenty of room to spare. Sharing Backyards links people with unused yard space with those looking for a place to grow food. If you have a garden and want to share it with someone, or if you are looking for a space to garden, Sharing Backyards is for you.

It's a great idea. I plan on using family members yard space as I have almost maxed out my own. I'm putting gutters on my fence for growing more greens and using potato boxes to maximize my crop in a smaller footprint.

I saw on Pinterest someone had used a pallet as vertical gardening space . . . let me look. http://lifeonthebalcony.com/how-to-turn-a-pallet-into-a-garden/ Here we go. Good idea to repurpose pallets, eh?

I think I may do this along my fenceline, bet it would be GREAT for herbs.
I haven't failed until I quit.

Always shared garden space with the next door neighbours on each side of the house. I had a 3 tiered garden down the side of the house. Each tier was 10' x 10' x 4'. Also had 2 built-up garden beds at the back of the house - 16'L x 4'W x 3"D for herbs, garlic, rhubarb, etc. Also had a 12' x 14' raspberry patch we shared - only problem was getting to the ripe berries before the brat ate them.

Neighbours had small 6' x 8' plots. One would plant tomatoes and lettuce; one would plant beans and peas; I'd plant cukes, radishes, onions, broccoli, peppers, chard, cabbage, carrots, squash, cauliflower, etc. When any of us needed something we'd hit the garden and take what we needed. Anything left at the end of the season was divided up and preserved or canned.

Get a neighbour to plants lots and lots of green peas. Different varities. That way one has lots of exercise to work off the blood sugar levels and freeze the booty.

How's that?

Brussels sprouts, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, cucumber, asparagus, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes are good. Pretty sure squash is okay - will have to ask gf.

Squash rocks, I freakin love squash.
Of course I'm the only person in my home who does.
I was planning on planting maybe a quarter acre of squash this year.
I have lots of garden space to share if anyone wants it
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
