Re: Gardening, flowers and veggies: 2014
Chatted up the neighbor down the way - he took down his Christmas lights and has strung up a bunch of decorations including CDs. He says they keep the birds away from his cherry trees and strawberry beds, etc. So... since that osprey/hawk invaded us and killed one of our hens, I strung up a few CDs on my clothesline that is close to where the dastardly event took place. Haven't even noticed the jays in the back yard since and no crows cruising over the back yard either. They can have the front yard where the lilacs and huge holly tree, the crabapple trees and other varieties exist. I know I will have to change configurations every once in a while to create a 'difference' but it is a cheap way to deter the critters for a while anyway.

I hear Jan Arden CDs are the best for deterring.

Most of my seeds are sprouting, going to transplant to little pots this weekend.

hey everyone! my first spring in kelowna in our own home. my wife took this awkward action shot of me working near the pond. just dug it out this week. planted some berries and fruit trees (italian plums and cherries from art knapp) and a bunch of veggies. everything is growing and i'm looking forward to a good growing year. some chickens would be nice, so would some honey bees. so many ideas, so little time :)

That depends on the veggies.
All mine except the frost intolerant ones are in.

I have peas, carrots, lettuce, radishes, bush beans, leeks, onions, garlic, spinach and chard in the ground right now. I usually plant them mid-March and they do very well. This is my first time growing leeks though so we'll see how it goes.

I have successfully (I hope!) re-potted seedlings into slightly larger pots. They're inside at the moment.
So - here's my question. How do I go about getting them ready for outside? I know it is early to start leaving them on the deck, still too cool. Except I have a little greenhouse (3 tier, covered with soft plastic). When can I move the seedlings there? And do I just do days for a while before leaving them overnight? When do I start opening the cover so they don't get too hot?

My asparagus is up! Eating them raw right out of the garden.
Turns out they survived in raised beds.

I've got two pickins outta my asparagus so far. Lovin it.
Looks like the frogs have started staying up all night for the season.
