Questions to ask roofer?

Post by Sige »

I tried to ask this question in an ongoing, almost dead, roofing thread and never got an answer. Castanutters are brilliant people with answers for everything so I will assume it was an oversight and reiterate my question in its very own thread :D

My question is - what do we need to know about a prospective roofing company before hiring them (besides the obvious "can they do the work")? Insurance? WCB? Anything else?

We've figured out who we want to do the work, we just want to make sure all *their* ducks are in a row.

Do they wear harnesses that are anchored to an anchor point?

If they have WCB coverage that is great, however you could still find yourself on the hook should someone get injured or killed.

Make sure they pronounce "roof" like a Canadian.

And that note on Campbell being implacated in the accident is scary as a homeowner. I would expect the contractor to be on the hook for failing to use safety equipment properly, not the homeowner.

OMG!!!! The guy we were looking at doesn't have insurance. How can you be a roofer and NOT have insurance???? Not using him for crying out loud.

BBB is useless and only trys to get money from a business. Don't go by them except as a last resort.

Friend of mine had her roof redone, then about 3 years later was doing a reno with a skylight to put in and discovered the roof was rotten. Low pitch, torch-on. Problem was the original design, no venting. The roofers never caught it and because it was considered a "maintenance" issue by insurance (hell no, we won't cover that!) they ended up spending $30,000 to pay for their half (duplex). Those roofers were long gone so no chance to recoup anything. New roofers ended up rebuilding the entire roof with vents.
I haven't failed until I quit.
