I used to grow giants.
For those of you who want to, Dills Atlantic giant is a good choice.
Growing a giant pumpkin is a great way to turn kids onto gardening.

I have a pumpkin the size of my palm :/ Oh well. My cantelopes never got bigger than golf balls. Think I'll take my friend up on her offer to help me install some proper watering systems.

Was a great year for tomatoes though.

we are still getting tomatoes. We also have new peppers growing. Build a small green house last year...hoping to plant lettuce for winter and maybe tomatoes and peppers.

This is for everyone who thinks our recent rain is taking care of watering deep roots.

Nope.

I gave parsley away today by digging deep to get the tap roots and it's so dry just five inches down. I have clay based soil, so it's tough to get the moisture down as it is, but I'm about to go out and dump water saved by the rain barrels all over the roses and bushes.

I also turned over a compost bin expecting it to be wet all the way through, but again, nope. Needed more added.

Hey, when saving seeds, I should probably wait for them to dry out some before collecting? A friend wants a seed head from one of my rudbeckia.

I'd say dry seeds are best.

We got the garlic bed covered in it's first layer of leaves this afternoon. Then the rains came back.

I blew out the irrigation and the pond auto fill, ran the corn stalks thru the wood chipper and put em on the garden, and winterized and put away the chipper and 2 mowers.
I dug up what's left of the spuds.
I had a few russet that are a foot long.

We're digging up leeks and carrots.

Roasted carrots with fresh peeled garlic and shallots are proving to be the best eating, hot and cold.

I'm leaving my corn stalks up for Halloween as I have a vague fun idea for them. I won't grow it again as my soil proved too clay based for good growth. And for all we eat of corn, I'd rather buy it anyways.

I've got basil to harvest. Mint if I can wrap my head around homemade mint sauce. Also, I've got Bolivian and Medusa peppers to decide what to do with.

I got one garden bed tidied today. Just one. And it took me 4 hours. But it happened! My front garden bed - needed weeding and trimming back. Hollyhocks are still blooming and so is rudbeckia. And bulbs are convinced it is spring

I've harvested Fall raspberries from two varities lately. Lots of parsley and basil left.

Most of the beds have huge mounds of leaves to protect the soil and encourage worm activity in the Spring.

I got my Vesey's catalogue in the mail this week. Time to dream of spring
