Bird is a Word: Grammatical Glitches

Post by Jo »

English is a crazy language, and what we sometimes do to the poor thing is just as crazy.

What misuses drive you the craziest?

In the world of spelling, I think the misspelling of 'definitely' (misspelled as 'definately') probably tops my list, spelling-wise.

What drives me around the bend the most, though, is the prevalent new habit of verbalizing nouns. Best little ditty I've found on the subject was this one:

A noun is a noun
And it sounds absurd
When someone authors it
Into a verb.

Actually, it has become so common a misuse that it will likely evolve into an accepted alternative spelling, as often happens . . . and then you'll be part of the avant garde!

I think one of my grammatical pet peeves is the use of "seen" instead of "saw" (ie, "I seen him the other day").

Another one is the good old double negative (ie, "I don't know nothing").

how about 'noone' when the intent is no one...

if a sentence called for 'no two persons... ',

who would type notwo?

this board is famous for noone.

Thank you Baba! I was trying to remember that one, and it wouldn't come to my befuddled early-morning coffee-deprived brain. :smt023
