The islanders had one heck of a good draft. And now they've got Trotz as head coach, I'd say things are looking up for them. Should be interesting to see if they can hang onto Tavares.

They have few issues, biggest is keeping Tavares which is going to be $$$.

The others is:
7 unsigned UFA's
6 unsigned RFA's

Of course next to keeping Tavares is actually getting a #1 goalie.

Oops almost forgot another big one, an actual home (there days at the Barclays Center could be numbered). Hint... hint Quebec City has brand new arena already.

Other then that all is good.

The lack of a permanent home for the next several years could have a definite impact on Tavares' decision. From what I am hearing, there are several teams in the running for his services, with the Islanders and San Jose being the front-runners. Other names I am hearing with an outside chance are Vegas, Toronto, Tampa Bay and Dallas.

I suspect there is 1 name in the 2018 Hockey Hall of Fame inductees that could be unwelcome.
I will let you the reader figure out who that is:

2 Canadian clubs are in need of a top defenceman:
Edmonton Oilers
Toronto Maple Leafs

Neither need the likes of John Tavares, both need the likes of Erik Karlsson.

Not if they don't improve greatly on the blue-line, they have the goalie & they had offensive scoring (even before adding John).

This can also be said for the Oilers, they have same 2 good points.... just lack on defence.

The signing of Tavares confirms one thing I’ve felt all along, that Auston Matthews really is a second line Centre.

It sounds like Karlsson wants to leave Ottawa. What a mess that team is in.

impo the downhill slide in the Senators camp started with loss & passing of GM Bryan Murray.
They have never recovered from that, it shows from owner & throughout organization.

Imho, the decision to build the rink in Kanata almost made failure of the franchise inevitable.

That's been there from day 1, fans have made 20 to 30 minute drive southwest of Ottawa. Yes, having the arena closer to Ottawa would have been a better choice.
Whats happening now within the team itself, is from what I posted above... they have never recovered from Bryan passing & his leadership.

I was reading a few weeks back that the oilers had expressed interest in Karlsson but I have no idea how they could pull that one off with their salary cap issues. It'd probably have to be a big 1 for 1 trade.
