Kelowna Mountain Biking
Local mountain bike club (MTBco) is working with the regional district and other levels of government to legalize several trail networks in the Kelowna area starting with trails in the Gillard area. Once a trail has been sanctioned, it is my understanding that it must be built (rebuilt) to a particular standard. It also opens up the opportunity for gov't funds to be used to get the trails to this standard and as well as for regular maintenance.
Kelowna is perfectly situated to take advantage of the wealth of natural terrain surrounding the city to make the Okanagan a mountain biking destination. Communities such as Rossland, Fernie, Williams Lake and Squamish to name a few, have used mtn biking to help inject cash into their local economies. Kelowna could do the same. Understand this is not intended to build up a Whistler bike park type of area, there is already Silver Star and Sun Peaks to fill the gravity riders need. But rather to appeal to the riders that like to earn their turns.
Attached is a petition started by MTBco. The more signatures the better. If this is something you feel you can support, please add your name to the list.

Seeing bike riders take the initiative to develop, operate and maintain property specific to and designated for biking only is something every one should get behind.

Trails like this are great, and it is encouraging to see groups building responsibly to limit harmful erosion.

Re: Kelowna Mountain Biking
The Lands and Forests became involved mainly because of the numerous complaints of motorized off roaders littering the hillside with beer cans, shotgun shells and shot up televisions etc.The Gillard trails were built for mountain bikes, hikers and trail runners not dirt bikes and overweight hill billies.
