9-year-old calls 911: Reports mother's drunk driving

A Newmarket mother has been charged after her terrified 9-year-old son called 9-1-1 to report that she was drinking and driving with him in the car.

“The kid’s a hero,” says Constable Andy Pattenden of the York Regional Police.

“For a 9-year-old to know and understand that drinking and driving is the wrong thing to be doing, and to be able to pick up that phone and call 9-1-1 even though it was his own mother, is unbelievable.”

That call came in just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday as the vehicle travelled between King Township and Newmarket. No voices could be heard, but sounds indicated that it was coming from inside a vehicle. When a call taker called the cellphone back, the boy answered.

“He was very scared,” Pattenden says. “The call taker was able to get him calmed down enough to get information out of him, but he was clearly, clearly scared.”

According to police, the boy said that he was in a van with his mother, who was drinking and driving. He was able to give the call taker his name, age, location and a description of the van before his mother got on the phone to say that she had only had one drink and that she was fine, before hanging up. <snip> Taken to a police station, she blew more than twice the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. <snip>
