Lower the speed limit to 30km?
British Columbia's first report on road safety recommends a speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour in urban areas to reduce deaths among pedestrians and cyclists.

What do you think? Should we lower the speed limit in urban areas to 30km an hour?

You know what would be even safer than 30km/h? 10km/h! C'mon, all in the name of safety, right!

We get down to Peachland now and then where the speed limit on Beach Avenue is 30km/h. It is very slow but if it saves lives it's certainly worth it. Maybe some major connector roads could remain at 50 but all other urban roads lowered to 30??

Re: Lower the speed limit to 30km?
Speed certainly contributes to the damage and human carnage that results from an "accidents" but I don't know that there are very many accidents caused by people going at the legally posted speed limit.
Would someone that refuses to stay under a posted 80kph, 70 kph, 60 kph or 50 kph stay under a 30 kph speed limit ?? The majority of people do not even do it in school zones where the risk is accordingly high.
Irresponsible drivers simply do not obey traffic laws in Kelowna. There is no "fix" to the problem. A classic example is the 50 kph speed zone on Hwy 97 west as you near the downtown area. Less than half of the people drive at the clearly posted speed limit.
Posting signs is of no use unless the City of Kelowna start giving the police the resources to enforce the laws they have seen fit to pass or adopt from Provincial Legislation.

50 k isn't very fast perhaps its time to bring those who are to challenged to function at everyone elses level up instead of dragging everyone down to their incompetent level, drivers as well as pedestrians.

50K is ok ... Now if police could/ would enforce it or people would just obey it , that's another thing .

A good start would start ticketing people for jaywalking, crossing when they don't have the right of way and riding their bikes where ever they please with no regard to traffic signals or stop signs.

50 km/hr is fine. We just need to remind people not to be idiots every so often. Most will listen, some will not.

Re: Lower the speed limit to 30km?
You drive taking things into consideration like pedestrian traffic, weather etc. up to a maximum speed limit.
Lowering the speed limit does nothing for the *bleep* who ignore those conditions.

Just one charge wording .... "did unlawfully do something clearly stupid in a public place, thereby endangering all other people in the area". Un-posed, unappealing pictures of all people doing stupid things published daily in the local media under the caption of "photos from the shallow end of the gene pool".
