Morning commute, Sept 6th, 2016

Post by Chris Nowell »

This observation is most definitely worthy of mention; This morning, on our commute to work at 6:30 AM, we experienced an enjoyable and stress free drive to our destinations.
A huge thank you must be extended to all the motorists who were on the Hwy 97 S route through the city at this time.
First noticed was the fact that EVERYONE was traveling at or slightly above the posted speed limit. Then we noticed that every vehicle was well spaced for the rate of traffic flow. Wow!!! NOBODY was tailgating or cutting others off and there weren't the occasional 20 car length gaps between some of the vehicles.
When we arrived at our first drop off it was mentioned that we had made record time and that we had made ALL the green lights without having to enter any intersection on the yellow signal.
Of course there was the usual lengthy wait at the first left turn onto Dillworth Dr, BUT, when the light turned yellow, EVERYONE stopped. There wasn't the usual 3 or 4 vehicles running the red light causing us to be blocking the intersection on the opposing green light while we made our turn.
The icing on the cake was when the first lane change was required. The first vehicle on our flank actually reduced speed and created an immediate opportunity to move over. This was a huge difference to the norm where, as soon as the turn signal is engaged, there are more than a few drivers who accelerate enough to close any gap and prevent any possibility of a lane change being executed.
Again, many thanks to all involved. This is proof that if everyone works together and adheres to protocol, things will go smoothly.
On a side note, it would be interesting to know if there was a surge in Ativan scripts written over the weekend. [icon_lol2.gif]

IMO most other persons can be influenced to drive with consideration if you take the initiative to make the first move regarding "enabling" lane changes, not blocking an intersection and letting a driver enter the highway from an side street or parking lot where only a yield sign is posted. That is particularly true when you can plainly see a red light and stopped traffic a few blocks ahead of you on the Highway. Travelling at below or above "normal" traffic flow or stopping "against the flow of traffic" such as to let a pedestrian jaywalk can be disruptive though.

Time of day makes a big difference. The key to making a enjoyable drive and safe one is timing.

Speed limits are there, lights are timed to posted speeds. IF everyone left 10 minutes earlier for their drive, they too could arrive safely, and not have to race to their destination driving like it's all about them!

And if this actually happened and the OP wasn't blissfully dreaming, then they were surrounded by the parents of school aged children who are no longer sleeping till noon and complaining about being bored. Schoooooooooooools in, for 10 months!

I had to laugh at your post Chris. We have been hearing honking horns and screeching tires on High Road all morning!

:spitcoffee:

Not even the advertised "Catch the Wave" on Springfield is timed to the lights, unless you do 10km/h above - then you've got a chance.

To be honest, it was a positive post. I kinda thought your way until I thought about it. Most are negative stories or rants.
