Speeding Thru a School Zone...on a bicycle!

Post by Always Sunny »

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-c ... -1.3751355

I heard about this one on the radio today. It's hard to comprehend why a cyclist wouldn't think the rules don't apply to them in this situation.

Cyclist/pedestrian collisions can potentially cause serious harm to both the pedestrian and the cyclist, not to mention the fact that the victim here is more likely to be a smaller child.

While I'm sure the variables and stopping distances on a bike versus a car vary greatly, I can't imagine a cyclist can safely stop (safe for the pedestrian AND themselves) on a dime.

On a related "yer an idiot" note...thumbs down to the idiot southbound on Water Street this morning. As all vehicle traffic was stopped at the three-way stop and I (as a pedestrian) was preparing to cross at the marked crosswalk at Doyle...a cyclist simply blows through the stop sign oblivious to the rules of the road. If I'd been hit at the speed he was going, we'd both be hurting something fierce.

Seeing that many cyclists out there don't think the rules apply to them in any situation, I have no problem believing that they don't believe the rules apply to them in this situation.

A bike weighs a few pounds. A car weighs slightly more.

A small adult and a bike could weigh 150 pounds. Are we going to start ticketing joggers over a certain weight just incase they "crash into" a child. What about people with bad balance? They could "fall onto" a child at walking speeds. Perhaps we need human training wheels for overweight pedestrians vectoring through school zones, just incase.

Ridiculous.
The true business of people should be to go back to
school and think about whatever it was they were
thinking about before somebody came along and told
them they had to earn a living.

Weight makes no difference since bicycles are considered a vehicle and supposed to follow traffic laws. I've never seen anyone excuse a driver for speeding through a school zone.

Except when it comes to crashing into children.

As mentioned, what about overweight people with poor balance?

They could fall on a child at walking speeds which is potentially more dangerous than a 110 pound women on a 20 pound bike bike crashing into a kid at 35 km/hr.

It's all about weight and speed.

Well Atomoa until that is added to a ticketed offense in BC like speeding threw a school zone. Until then I guess people should not fall on children. Remember Atomoa slow down in school zones.

Rules of the road don't apply to cyclists.
