Israel amassing WMD due to US backing

Joel Kovel, American writer, says that Israel is going unpunished for stockpiling weapons of mass destruction (WMD) as it is supported by the United States.

Israel exerts control "over the United States security apparatus so that they have what we call impunity and in a sense they can get away with anything,” Kovel told Press TV on Tuesday.

"They have actual backing of a super power who itself declares itself above the law and above any strength in the use of military force,” he added.

Israelis officials have recently insisted on keeping WMD unless all countries in the world agree to sign permanent peace deals with them.

Former Defense Minister Amir Peretz said that Syria's agreement to eradicate its chemical arsenal had nothing to do with Israel, saying everyone trusts Israel as a "democratic, responsible regime.”

Israel has repeatedly refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the recent ban on cluster munitions.

Israel reportedly has between 200 and 400 atomic warheads, but under its policy of so-called nuclear ambiguity, it has never denied nor confirmed its possession of the weapons of mass destruction.
