Why are some people lucky? What is luck, anyway?

Reminds me of this old story :

The Orchardist's Wisdom

Once there was 2,752 people who lived in America's biggest city - New York.

One morning they went to work, and died when some airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center.
The people in the city said "that was bad luck." And it was bad luck because they were all dead.

But another guy named Lucky Larry Silverstein got paid $5 billion for those buildings, which he hardly paid
any of his own money for. The people in New York said "He was lucky." And it was good luck, because
Larry made a healthy profit. Some people like Larry Silverstein always seem to be lucky.
they always seem to make a nice profit.
