Saffron is hugely expensive!!! Like gold almost. I don't even know where one would buy it - other than off the Net.
What does it taste like?

You can buy saffron at some ethnic grocery stores. It's also available at Bulk Barn ... $8.99 for a 1g package.

I saw it in the grocery store for something like $18 a tiny tube, I got a bag for $6.99 at the Italian market. It is hard to explain the taste, google says a woody taste. It adds a sweetish flavour which compliments the potatoes (i used the yellow flesh). We use it in soup a lot too, kind of adds a zing to even a chicken noodle, just a pinch mind you.

Thanks, zoo. I'll have a look around here and if it isn't too expensive, I might try it. Was that $6.99 pkg powdered or the threads?

I have never seen it in a powder, it looks like this.

It adds a nice golden color to food too. Sorry, google said a hay like flavor, I don't know I haven't ever tasted hay. True though, per weight saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. It is supposed to have health benefits as well. I shared that bag with my mom and it has lasted for months.

I bought the Johnsonville Chili and Cheese sausages today, 30% off at Extra Foods. Might have them with rice tonight, or heck, mashed potatoes.

Cut em in half, smother em with garlic butter/margarine and they only take 20 min to cook in the toaster oven.
