Documentaries

Post by usquebaugh »

I realize that this subject could also fit very well under Social Concerns, but I thought it would be neat for people to share their favourite documentaries. It's one of my favourite genres. I'd love to see this thread become a place for people to discuss the various social/political/historical/economical issues addressed in the documentaries people are viewing. :)

That's my list off the top of my head. Others will probably come to me!

ETA: Additions (this time around) are in bold font.

ETA: I thought I'd add the links, if people are interested in learning more about the issues discussed in these documentaries. :9923:

^^ Yes, they are both excellent expositions on US militarism.

I remember now that I've also seen

    Darfur Now
    Everything's Cool
    In Debt We Trust

I'll be adding all the new ones I've seen to the first post. Perhaps I should also make a wish list at the bottom of that post? I want to see Black Gold and Maxed Out now, too.

An excellent documentary is Chavez inside the Coup. The documentary team was inside the presidential palace when the coup took place and when Chavez returned. Really exposes a lot of the lies in the mainstream press about Chavez' government and the direct US involvement in the attempt to remove him. You should be able to find it on youtube.

^^ Thanks. :) It doesn't surprise me given the US's penchant for "regime change," particularly, in the South America.

I also recommend a documentary that CBC Newsworld presented on October 23, 2007: Prince of Pot: US vs. Marc Emery. You can find links to it at Marc Emery's myspace page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... D=70824890

I don't smoke pot, but I wish they'd legalize here in Canada, so that they can focus on gangs distributing hard drugs. There's no need for Canada to be like the US!

I watched Sicko the other night and I think it should be mandatory viewing for all Canadians so we don't ever allow a privatized system in our country.

Sicko made me cry, but my blood was also boiling! This is why the privatization that's been going on here in BC makes me sick. I know that at least one home for the elderly charges $4,000/month, and that is obscene. No one should be making such a profit on caring for the elderly. They have a right to live a dignified life and have nursing care provided for them without having their savings and pensions robbed blind. While this facility does have some IHA-funded beds, the majority afford the owner a hefty profit.

I laugh whenever I hear someone on CNN say that the US has the greatest health care in the world. I guess they only count those who make at least $1 million/year.

I don't know if anyone else is interested, but Robbing the Cradle of Civilization (a CBC Documentary) on the looting of Baghdad museum shortly after the US "liberated" the city. It's on the documentary channel.

Maxed Out was a good documentary, even if parts of the footage were repeat material from The Corporation and In Debt We Trust. It was sad, though, because it shows the damage to people who get in over their head. Two mothers who lobbied the US government to prevent a bankruptcy bill from being passed were unsuccessful in their attempts, although they demonstrated that their son and daughter, respectively, had committed suicide as a result of going deep into credit card debt. They simply wanted it to be harder for credit card companies to prey on students who do not have a steady job/income in order to make payments. Very sad.

Born Into Brothels. This is is part of the CBC series, The Passionate Eye.

Photographer Zana Briski went to Calcutta to document the lives of prostitutes in the red light district but instead ended up teaching the children born there photography to further their education and try and inspire them to see a life beyond the one into which they were born. This is a Documentary about these kids and the experience she had there. Here's a You Tube clip.

I've seen commercials for that. It looks good. The Passionate Eye usually has some great shows. I also like The Fifth Estate.

I highly recomend the documentary called The Union, the Business Behind getting High. The film really opens your eyes up! It is produced by a local Kelowna man named Adam Scorgie and has won many awards at Film Festivals around the US and Canada. Check out the trailer here.
