I understand that the Friends of the Library Sale started Thursday and was actually quite expensive this year.

Well, today, it's "fill a bag with books for $5.00" day.
The Sutherland Ave location, as per usual.

Lots of people there filling bags with books.

You pay $5 for their bag and then fill it. Walk out with the bag. Prices were $2 per book. Seems steep since they're all donated and the thift stores are cheaper.

Anyone got any insight on the sale this Fall? I missed it due to travelling.

I just finished Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistlestop Cafe by Fannie Flagg

I had seen the movie (and remembered I loved it) but had never read the book. I loved it so much. It's one of those books you really don't want to end. I wanted so much to just stay there in Whistlestop! :)

I just finished "The Man with the Golden Torc" by Simon Green. Think druidic magic/super high tech meets James Bond. It was a little reminiscent of Spyder Robinson's writing, specifically "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon".

A Head Full Of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay This is one of those books that, after you finish it you just don't know what to read next. Nothing is going to come close to this story.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd Not the type of book I usually read, but I enjoyed it! :) Sad and sweet at the same time.

NOW I am reading The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty

I thought I had read it. Maybe I did in the '70's but there is so much more to the story (of course!) than was covered in the movie.

I've got the last two to read, but being sick I haven't been able to do much else.

I finished The Exorcist last night. I have to tell you, there is more detail in the book of course, but honestly, the dialog between characters was pretty horrible. "Would you like a cup of coffee?" "Okay, well, yeah." I wish I could find out how many times different characters answered with that. Not just one, but most of them. lol It was annoying.

I just finished Closing Time: The True Story of the "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" Murder by Lacey Fosburgh

It was really good! The book delves into both the murderer and murdered personalities. (Which is the reason I read this kind of thing.)

In my never ending pursuit of reading the classics I finally got around to Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. Master of character development, narrative and psychological entertainment.

Man. I have Lord Jim on my Kindle. My poor brain is still numb from reading the works of Poe. Which I didn't finish. Did you know he wrote a bunch of REALLy boring essays too? LOL

I've got Uncle Tom's Cabin lined up after my Gregory McGuire book is done.

If you love literature, fine writing, lasting images in your brain forever, historical significance and biographies you will absolutely love and treasure "Speak, Memory" by Vladimir Nabokov. What an evocation of a life, I felt and still feel like I was right there with him during his formative years.

This book is rated # 1 across the globe for category Biography by other writers and critics.

Then, when done with that and you'd like more try "Lolita" by Nabokov. I have read it probably 12 times now and each reading brings greater understanding and insight. It is also hilarious being written tongue in cheek by a master storyteller. Naturally with art there are those who decry the obvious subject matter, (the real subject is slyly obscured) but adults can pick this up and read a moving love story for a person and his new homeland that has stood the test of time for fifty years.

I too was interested in Poe at one point during high school. A few nice poems, scary stories, but soon outgrew them. However, I am happy to see that older "lit" is still being read.

Theodore Dreiser wrote "An American Tragedy" which was on my list for a couple of years so finally ordered it through library. Wouldn't you just know it? A thick book (yeah!) but the print is almost microscopic so returned it unread. I think I waited too long.
