What is for dessert tonight?

Post by Glacier »

Tonight it was Breyer's double churned real vanilla ice cream covered with freshly picked wild raspberries and thimbleberries.

Yes, but isn't there a look a like berry one has to watch out for? I think we saw Thimbleberries up around Larch Hills, but I was afraid to try it.
As WW3 develops, no one is going to be dissing the "preppers." What have you done?

Thimbleberries have always been a favourite wild berry of mine. They are by far the most abundant wild berry around my place. Drive up to any old clear-cut and you'll likely find millions of them.

There is another wild berry that grows on our plateaus commonly used by native people to make "indian ice cream," but unlike thimbleberries and raspberries it's an acquired taste. This berry called "no wuss" by the Carrier, "no wick??*" by the Chilcotin and "whoo shum" by the Shuswap is better known as the soopolallie berry. Here is a picture I took last week:

I love thimbleberries, too - they make great jelly.

My fav still is and will always be huckleberries. Not too many of those make it home unless the patch is really abundant with them. I miss my huckleberry days and don't know where they are around here (and I know better than to ask the pickers because they guard those secrets with their lives!)

I do know where some thimbleberries are, though, so I should check to see if there are berries on them this year. I might not be too late.

Soopalallie is an interesting plant. I haven't come across any in my travels here but I don't venture out into or live in the bush like I used to. Sometimes I really miss those days. Sometimes not.

This is an interesting site: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/rsi/fnb/fnb.htm
