Which really doesn't mean Halloween is the most cruel day of the year. Sugar is available in many different forms all year long.

Halloween is a great night for kids to dress up and hang out with their friends and families. Most of my neighbourhood is getting geared up. When I was a kid we use to have get togethers and play games like dunking for apples - total fun.

^^^Exactly. Let the kids enjoy a night of ghosts 'n goblins. As for the candy, my dentist said to let the kids eat as much as they wanted in 2-3 days making sure they brushed their teeth after eating. He said it was better for them to have a sugar overload for a few days than letting them have candy every day for 2-3 weeks.

I think we spend a $billion dollars innorth America on Halloween.
I htink childhood diabetes is on the increase.
I think childhood obesity is getting out of hand.
ADHD is reaching epidemic proportions.

I think when we get old, $300 billion is spent on pharmaceutical drugs
because sickness and disease is our number one industry.

so I would turn that billion dollars into good nutritional advice for the kids.
when I was a kid, dressing up as something was really no big deal - it didn't thrill me.
It was the candy that made me go berzerk as a kid.
I still think tons of candy given to kids, is criminal offense.

Please post the link regarding the amount of money spent on Halloween. There is good nutritional advice for kids out there. My kids didn't come home with "tons" of candy but a bagful that most could go in the freezer and doled out when they wanted a treat. They also know how to brush their teeth. We do like our chocolate. Some parents give out pencils and erasers. It's not a criminal offence thank goodness.

Let them have Halloween
The most cruel day of the year? I could think of many other good choices for that.
Close your doors, turn off the lights and don't think about.
Too many other horrible things in life to complain about this....IMO

One thing about the billion dollar industry - people pay "tons" of money for costumes and decorations. And I'm truly amazed at some of the costumes the little ones wear - all you can do is go "ahhh!!! - aren't they adorable!!

Childhood obesity, diabetes or dental problems is not caused from Halloween. Those are the result of years of poor choices for the child - not one day of fun! (or a weeks worth of candy.)
Why not embrace the kids being kids? They dress up, walk the neighborhood with Dad or Mom, get oodles of candy and make memories that'll last for a lifetime. It's fun for the children, it's fun for us parents and fun for most everybody else. Lighten up!

How do you feel about Christmas, candy canes, excessive turkey dinner's with sugary desserts. My children where never denied candy as children, it was always available on the table in a bowl, in thier lunch etc. They did not have excessive tooth decay, are not obese, do not have diabetes. As a matter of fact most of the time they ignored the candy...most of thier freinds could not believe it. If you don't allow it they will want it, make it a normal part of thier lives and it will be nothing special.

You have a point. Christmas is obviously the most cruel day of the year. Days upon days of getting stuffed.

I don't think it's criminal to hand out candy at Halloween, but think about it, candy isn't the only option. Some hand out small toys, childrens books, and even, wait for it, toothbrushes.

I believe the emphasis on the expense for the costume has gone way overboard, but that's about it.

Incredibly easy fix to this problem:
1) properly portion diet with healthy choices
2) exercise, both cardio & weights

Do this 24/7 365 & both type 2 diabetes as well obesity, would be in the past. Of course this means parents have to get off there as es & give damn about themselves as well their children.

Everything in moderation i.e sweets, fast-food & video games etc...etc
