Ever watch the Food Feeder youtube channel? Tasted did a bit on these black buns - they've been around in Asian countries for a while. If I remember correctly, the dye components are charcoal and/or squid ink.
His schtick is he's a foodie who is forced to review junk food, and sometimes taste test it. He tends to be foul mouthed, but my husband thinks he's hilarious.
I haven't failed until I quit.

Good question. What the hell is in our bread? I left a slice of bread and a hot dog bun on my counter for a month and it didn't go mouldy. That's scary. I know this doesn't actually follow this story but fits the subject title.

Mould needs moisture. Your bread or bun dehydrated before it could develop mould. Same with your store-bought croutons or crackers you keep in your cupboard. No moisture = no mould.

Any bread left on the counter 5-10 years ago got mouldy, in fact it would after one week.

I bake my own bread and have left a few slices on the counter to dry for croutons and they have never gotten mouldy. I have also done the same with store bought bread/buns. Left in a plastic wrapper they will all go mouldy within a VERY few days. My experience with this has been over my last 50 years.

Mind you, if you start out with leaving bread that has BEGUN to develop mould - you are stuck with mould. But of course, you should be able to detect mould, if not by eye, by the smell of the product. Can't change a sow's ear into a silk purse.

I have seen restaurant bins that hold bread ends for DAYS to use in bread pudding and they are COOL and DRY areas of the kitchen.

Moisture = mould.

When I bake my own bread, which is NOT full of preservatives, it indeed will go mouldy after a few days. Have to keep it frozen and take out slices as I need them. Bread should go mouldy, if it is fit for consumption it would.

^I'm glad to see you keep your precious homemade bread in the freezer and not the fridge (where in plastic wrap it would go mouldy just as soon as keeping it on your counter). Nothing like your own home baked bread taken slice by slice out of the freezer and either popped into the toaster in the morning or zapped in the nuker for 30 seconds, slathered with butter or dipped into your own home-made soup for lunch!

I am baking bread tomorrow..... yummmm.... Think I will do up some smoked pork hock green pea soup wile I'm at it.

No, and I don't plan on trying one anytime soon. Here's an interesting news article about the side effects of eating one.
