Jimmy Buffett. Nice, island music, but he really, really can’t sing. At all. At all.

There's a lot to be said about the CanCon issue...bands in the 80's and 90's that got tons of airplay in Canada because of the Canadian Content requirements. So many bands from that time got a lot of airplay, then suddenly disappeared. I suspect many of these bands never actually had the fan interest to match the airplay that they got. But that's one for another thread probably.

It's hard for me to say a band is overrated; I've always been a believer that popular music is big enough for everyone, and I've never spent enough time listening to band I dislike to develop a real hatred for them.

I want to hate Nickelback for their misogynistic, fratboy anthems. But having seen them in concert four times (once before they were signed), I can't deny they are good players and a very good live band.

The Doors are a band who are widely admired, but I never got them. Def Leppard is one of the few bands I've developed an active disliking for.

As for a band that is loved worldwide, and I never thought was particularly good at anything musical...I'll say AC/DC.
When someone says they pay taxes, you know they're about to be an ******e.

Matt Good is another overrated singer. I've seen him in Kamloops, and he was off key the entire time.

P.S. Somewhat related...

Oasis. Overrated, over-hyped and not worth the pain in my ears.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

I agree that a lot of Canadian bands are over rated. This is due to CanCon rules that force Canadian radio stations to play X amount of Canadian bands per hour. It makes for sub standard bands being elevated far above what they should be rated. Hence, over rated.
Elvis. He didn't play an instrument, didn't write songs or music. He sang, but that's about it. Despite liking some of his songs, to me he is the definition of overrated. Glam bands like the Spice Girls, Backstreet boys, and all the teen one hit wonders are overrated as well. Can't play an instrument, don't write their own songs, they all sound the same, but they look good.
Oh yeah, Oasis sucks. never understood the like for that band.

So many it's hard to compile a list. Add pretty much any of those lame pop acts that are popular of Kelowna's lame disco stations.

I've always thought that The Tragically Hip was very overrated.

There are lots of bands who I don't listen too, but I still think they are amazing bands and great song writers. That's the key - there are tons of people out there who can play instruments very well, but there are very few who can write music and create a totally unique sound.

Someone mentioned the Sex Pistols. One of my favourite bands. For a group of guys who were totally unschooled in music, they created a sound that completely upset the music industry and absolutely infuriated the establishment. Steve Jones is considered to be one of the most influential guitar players of all time. He'd only been playing the guitar for 3 months when he played with the Pistols for the first time. How many guitar players can you name who accomplished what he did 3 months after picking up the guitar?

The Ramones are another band with a totally unique sound yet were not very accomplished musicians.

Beatles - best band ever. Bowie - innovator and brilliant songwriter. Dylan - can't stand him, but he's an amazing song writer.

Super subjective discussion.
