As we remember his achievements as a scientist and popularizer of science today, let's not forget that time he sent John Oliver to the burn unit.

Anita Shreve, who explored themes of love, loss and betrayal in best-selling works of fiction, and whose 1998 novel, “The Pilot’s Wife,” sold millions of copies after Oprah Winfrey chose it for her television book club, died March 29 at her home in Newfields, N.H. She was 71.

The cause was breast cancer, said her husband, John Osborn.

Ms. Shreve was a teacher, journalist and nonfiction author before she began to focus on fiction in her early 40s. She went on to publish 18 novels, which became fixtures of countless book groups and attracted a large and loyal following.

Love her or hate her for the rumoured corruption surrounding her later years, but she lived a life none of us can ever imagine.

South Africa's state broadcaster says Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, prominent anti-apartheid activist and the ex-wife of Nelson Mandela, has died. She was 81.

Madikizela-Mandela was married to Nelson Mandela from 1958 to 1996. Mandela was imprisoned throughout most of their marriage and Madikizela-Mandela's own activism against the apartheid regime led to her being imprisoned for months and years under house arrest.

Her political activism was marred by a kidnapping and assault conviction in 1991, for which she was fined. She faced these allegations again during the 1997 hearings before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a panel that investigated apartheid-era crimes.

As a parliamentarian after South Africa's first all-race elections, she was convicted of fraud. Still, she was widely venerated in South Africa for her role in fighting white minority rule.
As WW3 develops, no one is going to be dissing the "preppers." What have you done?

'Butterfly Boy' has passed away.

He found solace and strength in science fiction, and like those he read about, Jonathan Pitre had otherworldly qualities.

He had one of the most painful diseases known to medicine, epidermolysis bullosa (EB), but was defiantly happy. He couldn’t scratch without tearing his skin, but dreamed of playing hockey. Ostracized by other children, he thrived in the adult world: poised, thoughtful and genuine.

Jonathan Pitre died Wednesday evening in a Minnesota hospital. He was 17.

Jonathan fought desperately to live, but he succumbed to complications from septic shock — an organ-destroying condition triggered by a rampant infection.

Mitzi Shore, the hard-driving proprietor and mother hen of The Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip who lorded over the white-hot center of the stand-up universe of the late 1970s and '80s, died Wednesday after a battle with Parkinson's disease. She was 87.

Shore gave such young comics as Robin Williams, David Letterman and Jay Leno a chance to thrive onstage before a live audience and be discovered.

"It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that we report the passing of Mitzi Shore, the legendary Godmother of the world famous Comedy Store," the club said in a statement. "Mitzi was an extraordinary businesswoman and decades ahead of her time who cultivated and celebrated the artistry of stand-up comedy. She was also a loving mother, not only to her own four children, but to the myriad of comedians who adored her. She leaves behind an indelible mark and legacy and has helped change the face of comedy."
