Dan Gurney, one of auto racing’s most important and influential figures, has died at 86 from catastrophic pneumonia.

Gurney, known as the ‘Big Eagle’ to his friends and legions of fans, came to define America’s concept of a race car driver in the 1960s. The New Yorker took to driving in 1955 after serving in the Korean War, and before long, the tall, dashing American was barnstorming Europe’s premier racing series with great success.

His first Formula 1 victory came in 1961 for BRM and he gave Porsche its maiden Grand Prix win the following year. In a growing tradition, Gurney went on to give Brabham its first F1 win in 1964.

Gurney’s most famous driving accomplishment has become part of American lore. Piloting a car designed and built by his own All American Racers outfit, Gurney’s win at the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix continues to serve as the only victory captured by an American in an American Formula 1 car.

Tragic that he died but I am glad it wasn't drug abuse or an accidental overdose of prescribed medications. I am getting tired of losing icons like Tom Petty and Prince and Heath Ledger to name a few.

Can you believe this Lady t, I've never read a single book of hers. For all the titles I've ever read? I plan to correct this now that I understand more now.

Really? Wow! She was one of the authors that helped me move from fairytales to fantasy. "The Riddlemaster of Hed" was the first book of hers I ever read.

Olivia Cole, who won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Matilda, wife to Chicken George in the landmark miniseries "Roots," has died, a burial association executive said. She was 75.

Cole died last Friday at her home in San Miguel de Allende, a central Mexico city, said Linda Cooper, executive secretary of the 24 Horas de San Miguel de Allende cremation and burial group.

The cause of death was a heart attack, Cooper said Thursday.

Cole received an Emmy Award for her role in ABC's smash hit 1977 drama based on African-American writer Alex Haley's book "Roots," which dramatized the lives of his ancestors from West Africa to slavery and post-Civil War.
