Celery, why, oh why??
Celery, a veg that is an essential part in so many recipes from soups, stir fry, salads or steamed as a side dish has now become unaffordable.
On a recent trip, stopped at Omak's Walmart to pick up a few (ok, a lot) of items and found celery there to be $2.00 ($2.60 Cdn) but here, in SuperStore it is $6.00, a huge jump.
Are we being ripped off? Can anyone justify this outlandish price which is immitating last year's cauliflower boondoggle ($7.00 up to $10.00) per head.
How are we to come close to what the Canada Food Guide insists we should be eating, more veggies, when prices are so high? What do peeps feed their kids? Oh right...they let them go hungry and expect the schools to pick up the tab.
Celery was once grown in the Armstrong area in such quantities that it was shipped to Eastern Canada and down to (wait for it) California.
Seems we better pull up our own socks and not rely on growers south of us to strip our wallets.

Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

Blame the celery juice craze that's driving up the price.

"It's a fortune — it's the highest I've ever paid. We're talking well over $100 a case," said Carmelo Papia, producer manager at Fiesta Farms in Toronto.
At nearly $6 a bunch, he says he's never seen celery sell for so much in the more than 30 years he's been working at the grocery store. "What we're selling them for, we aren't really making any money."

Who are you kidding? Seems to sell fast and it certainly WAS a staple in mine.I wouldn't say celery is a staple vegetable for most people.

Tip for storing celery ... keep it whole, wrap it in aluminum foil, and store in the crisper drawer of your fridge. The foil should be tight enough so moisture can’t escape, but not tight enough that it crumples the stalks. It will keep for a month or more stored this way.

Tried that with cucumbers - just isn't quite the same eating it fresh. Close though...

Were you able to get young plants from garden centers?
Really, if it was grown in huge amounts in Armstrong for export, we should also be able to grow celery in our own gardens. I was told that the ground was boggy where the fields were situated. Many Chinese labourers were employed in planting, hilling up sides, and then the final harvest.
Anyone grown celery successfully?

Sure, sure.
It just doesn't get hot enough here for bacon to sprout strips.

This is just another boondoggle of our federal government.
Justin said, “we need to bring in more tax revenue, what else can we tax?”
Morneau said, “Let’s just tax them more on their salaries.”
Justin replied, “yes, let’s do that, I never liked that vegetable anyways.”
Morneau was going to explain it to him but couldn’t be bothered. “Okay, we will raise the tax on celery.”
