Some areas didn't get the heavy rains - Fintry board has the high rating.

Quailize wrote:Fancy, at the moment Kelowna is on moderate danger. Plus, you quoted something I said that was posted the day of the heavy rains, when the danger was very low.

Kelowna was also in moderate danger when you made the post to which fancy referred. See for yourself:

Not to mention that a single day of rain is not going to drop the fire rating. Back during the time of the Terrace Mountain Fires, officials said that we'd need a good week of rain to make any difference in the fire ratings.
So I love the Okanagan but it's a place best enjoyed from atop a very large pile of $100 bills. - Spocky

Well the rain did lower the hazard a bit. As of right now, danger classes as follows:

Penticton 4 (5 is Max.)

Fintry 3 Drought Code at Fintry is 755. At 500+, fires can be very active and control can be very difficult.

Salmon Arm 4

No rain on the weather stations since Thursday. Windy conditions have cured fuels out as well. It goes to show you, with the right conditions, it does not take long to bounce back.

Outlook for the rest of July to the end of Sept., hotter and drier than normal, below normal precip. This is for the lower mainland, the island and the southern half of the province to the rockies into AB. There may be a season yet, just a late start. Heads up everyone!

Probably most people follow the weather forecasts. Doesn't matter what the forecasts are if the rain doesn't fall. 30% doesn't mean much - even 60% doesn't mean it will rain.

So what is the real danger rating? The map says "High" and the sign says "Extreme."

That is just the projected forecast from Env. Canada, not current.

The Wildfire Management Branch has several weather stations across the Province. They each indicate a "danger class" from 1 to 5. Kelowna to the US border is mod to high 3-4. Kelowna north to Salmon Arm fire zone is mod to high as well, Vernon fire zone in a 3, SA in a 4. These numbers are driven by weather indices.

Here is today's fire danger rating. Notice that almost the entire Cariboo fire district is rated as very low, in stark contrast to last year.

And for comparison, here is the map from exactly one year ago:

Ah, thanks for posting, Glacier! I was looking for someone who had a saved copy from last year.

As posted by bcwildfire.ca this afternoon:

"British Columbia is experiencing the slowest fire season start in the last decade, allowing the Wildfire Management Branch to lend over 1,500 personnel to other provinces so far this year."

Here's todays map. Over %90 per cent of the map is "low" or "very low" danger rating.
