Lighting Rutland

Post by Beefdip »

Lots of dry lighting this morning 3:30am. By my view it seems to be hitting black mountain.

Geezz talk about getting picky about terms. Okay then, hear the thunder that is created when lightning occurs. Happy?

Thunder is the sound made by lightning. Depending on the nature of the lightning and distance of the listener, thunder can range from a sharp, loud crack to a long, low rumble (brontide). The sudden increase in pressure and temperature from lightning produces rapid expansion of the air surrounding and within a bolt of lightning. In turn, this expansion of air creates a sonic shock wave which produces the sound of thunder, often referred to as a clap, crack, or peal of thunder. The distance of the lightning can be calculated by the listener based on the time interval from when the lightning is seen to when the sound is heard.

Around 4:30 this am there must've been lightning strike somewhere pretty close to my house. The thunder was so booming that it rattled the dishes - made the dogs bark like crazy! Lots of rain with it though, I wouldn't be concerned about this batch of lightning creating any fires.

Actually, you CAN hear lightning... the sound it makes is called thunder.

Actually the sound lightning makes is a crackling sound, thunder is the sound of the air rushing into the void the lightning creates. :127:

Get as detailed as you want, super heated air rapidly expanding to create sound, whatever, I like this explanation the best
no lightning, no thunder. simple!
