Long weekend reminder to put your campfire out

PARKSVILLE – With sunny and warm conditions predicted for the last long weekend of the summer, the Coastal Fire Centre is urging the public to be careful with their campfires and to ensure their campfire is completely out when they leave the area, as abandoned campfires pose considerable risk for fire escapes.

The public is also reminded that an open fire prohibition is still in place that prohibits smaller open fires that are not campfires within any area that is not governed by a local open fire bylaw. While campfires are not prohibited, the public is reminded to keep campfires small and under control at all times.

Quote:

Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson –
“Thanks to the unsettled weather and cool conditions in most of the province, this fire season has been the slowest on record. The Coastal Fire Centre has had 66 fires within its boundaries, 63 of which were person-caused. I am urging people to be vigilant with their campfires and to remember that a wildfire can start in an instant, even in cooler weather.”
