Just depends on the situation. If there's a lot happening on the board, then it is faster and easier to simply delete the posts. If there's more time, you get the 'deleted by' message.

Thanks Jo, my goodness what a quick response!
I thought perhaps there was some sort of criteria for it like new offenders get the "removed" to let them know that what they said was bad and not an error in hitting submit.

Oh that's only if they're in a good mood. When they're crabby, your keyboard starts electrocuting you at regular intervals.
You cannot reason someone out of a position that they did not use reason to arrive at.

You should see the PM mail I get behind the scenes. I call them love letters now. :D

i don't know about the other 3 but for me it is a time thing. if there are tons of posts that need to be dealt with it is much easier to just delete them. if there aren't a lot them just removing and leaving a message is what i do. :)

To my thinking if a post is deemed inappropriate by staff then it should simply be completely deleted and be done with it.
Leaving someones post with their text deleted and replaced by a message from staff just tends to come off as power tripping.
I can see it if all that's been removed is a phone number or such, but I've noted a lot of times where everything is gone but a message from staff which almost seems contrary to rules.
Members are told to not argue with mods in public so how is it any different when a mod opts for public reprimand?

And there is a perfect example that you can't please all the people all the time. Many people think it is FAR worse to remove the entire post.

Only to those who choose to see it that way.

The only time you'll see this is when everything was off-topic, and the message from staff is to get back on topic.

Over the years, the vast majority of members have told me that they prefer the edit with a brief reason given rather than a delete. Aside from which, editing offers a distinct advantage for us: It helps us track just HOW bad one particular member is behaving. If we do a search on someone's name and most of his or her posts look like this: *removed/--* then we have a quick snapshot of a troublemaker. If his posts are simply deleted, a search of said posts makes them look innocent as a newborn babe. Very deceptive.
It is what it is, people.
